A friend of mine says he has a Glass Ignition Coil. I guess I believe him, but I have never heard of such a thing. He says you can see the copper coils with oil inside. If I buy him enough lunchs he might give it to me, Do I want it? Who made it? What is one worth? Taco Bell or Steak? thanks
really early coils were basically built in a glass jar, so yeh its real.. maybe two taco bells or a minute steak, probably wont be 12V or usable.
get him some tacos and tell him you just want to hold it............. that didnt sound kosher did it.
When I see it, if I see it and if its cool, then and only then will we discuss what kind of lunch you'll be getting Ed. So far my Hamb advisors are going with Tacos.
i have one, ill take pictures of it tomorrow. its NOS and im pretty sure that it would work. its a 6 volt coil too. its called a "runbaken oil coil" made in england.
I saw a picture of one on a car(VERY COOL LOOKING) it would make a cool paper weight if nothing else?
There are ads for the British oil filled coils in all the early rodding mags circa 1950...will see if I can find one.
Well, he brought one today just like he said. Its glass and you can see the oil swish around inside. Its gotta be older than dirt but in excelent condition. Its a Blue Flash Connecticut Tel. & Elect. Corp. Meriden Conn. He Is now talking of selling it. Pm any offers. I bought him lunch at Taco Bell. Steak burrito.
Here's a couple Runbaken coils I have...ones a 12 volt & the other 6 volt. The 6 volt came NOS in the box. As mentioned previously, they were advertised in some of the early speed catalogs during the 50's. They were normal replacements for British cars. I saw some exotic glass ones at the Big Three swap in San Diego one year...I think Alfa
That's pretty slick looking, I'm guessing they are using PBBs or some other nastiness for oil though.
Make sure you shut it off before refilling, because the electricity could travel up the stream, and...well, you get the idea.
How do these things work? Could you get a baby food jar and some stuff from Radio Shack and make your own?
In theory, but you would have carpal tunnel by the time you got enough 'turns' on the coil. Oh, I think a baby food jar may be a bit shallow (short, whatever). I forget what the turns ratio is on an ignition coil.
