I just recently landed my hands on a 53' Plymouth and was wondering the easiest way to convert it to a 12 Volt system. I have heard many different ways of doing it and was just curious. Any suggestions.

1954 (I think) was the first year for 12 volts. Swap away from positive ground, keep the 6v starter and install the 12v generator. Also get a new regulator. Then swap all the bulbs out. I never did change my fuel gauge, and it worked for years afterwards on my '50 Plymouth.

First year for 12 volt on Mopars was 56. I'm converting my 53 Dodge right now. Got a 57 Plymouth generator and regulator a Ford starter solenoid, changed all the bulbs, switched the wires on the coil. Hopefully I'll get it fired pretty soon! (like in a couple hours)

ez wiring kit...it worked for me,Real simple and easy. I just had to watch laid55 (Rene) lay out all the wires and do his thing. But seriously, it is pretty simple. KNUX!

  7. WHat about your electric dash gauges? Normally a voltage drop works, but you reversed the ground...

My plan is for me and John (50suburban). To get together, slam some beers and re-wire the entire thing. Thx for the imput fellas. Adios.

Hey, don't forget about the 6v heater blower motor - 12v makes those things smell kinda funny.
