That is not tuck and roll, its top stich. There is a big difference in the time and effort it takes to do top stich and real T&R. Not saying the price wasnt great, because it was, but its not comparing apples to apples.

In 1962 I had a 57 Chev. that had Tuck and Roll already in it. However the front seat was losing it because the material was a cheap naugahyde. I ventured to T.J. to have the seat and headliner redone. I must say that the job they did was great, I did not stay to watch but went drinking instead. A few things in the glove box were missing when we left but no big thing. Fortunately I had the tax reciept from the previous job with me so when crossing the border I presented that when they questioned me about the upholstery. They knew it was redone but could not do anything about it. I ran across the car in the early 90's and the headliner was still perfect. The seats had been stolen while I owned it (by a friend and his buddy who needed seats for his 57, another story). In this day and age it is not worth the hastle to go to T.J. in my estimation.

Actually p***ports arent required yet. Two forms of ID are. They have postponed the obligation of the US p***port until later this year. Anyone else taken their oldie down there? Pics? Suggestions?

And the clincher is that you don't have to have id to go down there but to come back to the states you do, last I heard.

Be careful a friend took a '56 big window to have a new interior installed. He gave them his address and phone number for their paperwork. Stayed close to watch what was going on, left only for a quick lunch. While he was gone they must have made a copy of the key. Two week later the pick-up was stolen from his driveway, the thieves had his address and a key. Too easy

Here's the update as of Tuesday May 13th. For the past 6 years i have gone to TJ and had Upholstery done at least once every 2-4 months. I've had Hot rods,Customs,Muscle cars, furniture,Boats, etc done .I have had everything done in every design you can imagine.

In the past, the final product depended on the shop you went, how patient you were, and how much money you gave them.

In the past year things have changed, not just in TJ, but Mexico in general. Things are NOT good down there. People are being kidnapped and held for ransom, the drug cartel is everywhere and as close as the border, and the TJ Police is being run out by the military. The last time i had work done down there tourists and a few police officers were kidnapped and held by a group of radicals in a steel & block wall building. A shoot out took place just 3 miles from the district where i frequented. Tourism has decreased significantly, and every time i go down there i see less and less gringo's. I hope i am not coming off like i am putting down the country of Mexico or Mexicans. I am simply stating the truth of that third world country, and letting you all know how it REALLY is. No one on here goes down there for upholstery as much as i do...thats a fact, but unless things get better over night i am seriously thinking of ceasing my trips south of the border.

Sorry to be a party pooper. I just don't want to make it sound like a fun day at the park when in reality it aint.

Why does everyone complain about US jobs going overseas, yet have no problem taking their dollars south of the border while taking work away from a hard-working, highly skilled American? Put your money where your mouth is

You are right, they are all the same thing. And they are both the wrong thing to do.

When did ending up with more money in your pocket become more important than being a good american?

When did it even become a debatable question?
Quick, get as much money in your pocket today as possible, that is the most important thing?

This isn't a rice rocket forum is it? Who are you people?

ending up with more money in our pocket is freaking important to me since the government started blowing big bussiness and oil companies and giving us the shaft, royally. Making sure i eat and my family do the same(we have got used to this habit) is being a good american, remember as people into old cars that **** gas we need all the money we can get if we are to continue this hobby/lifestyle. our lives arent getting any easier,do what you can, survival is a great american trait.

Hypocrites. Learn to do it yourself... like body work and paint... or pay an American to do it. Axle's story only adds more weight to the situation. I can't believe you guys are willing to risk your lives to send your money south of the border, while American-owned businesses next door are struggling.

Hell, teach yourself to s***ch like you taught yourself to weld, make your own interiors, and when your buddies need a seat reupholstered, you could even make a buck with your new skills.

Axel speak the truth. I have hispanic American friends that don't go to vacation there any more. Unless it is at a secured compound.

Well im not a gringo. Im mexican. I may have been born in the states but my parents are hispanic. I go there monthly and I have never felt threatened nor in any danger whatsoever. Maybe im in the wrong part of town. ^_^
Boy wouldnt I love to learn how to sew? But you know what? I work full time here at scripps mercy hospital. I help save peoples lives. We all dont have spare time to gain knowledge in different trades such as welding, bodywork, sewing, etc. etc. As for the money thing. What about the money we save on the interior going for other things here in the states. Like gas? We do contribute a significant amount of our money to those oil companies you know?
Guess what people? Mexicans need to eat too.

Now. If there is anyone interested in going down there in a large group contact me ASAP. I plan on going down there before the end of the month so my Cadi can be ready for ink and iron ^_^

wow so taking $500 to get a new interior in mexico is wrong? how bout the millions of dollars that the gov. sends over to other countries to ****ing feed them? sing the song to them.

since it takes me $1200 to fill up my rig to keep delivering goods so other people could still have jobs, i think i'll save a few bucks wherever i can so i can continue eating.

Those pics are hilarious dude. Well im going down there. Im trying to find a contact number first. Call one of the shops and feel them out before hand. I was thinking of just taking the seats down there. But my dash is wrapped so it needs to be done as well as the deck tray =)

so, it's not OK for companies to send jobs overseas (which hurts things like wages here in the US), but it's OK for you to send your money overseas? Which is something you have control over?

Do you pay someone in Mexico to do your tune-ups, body work, paint, etc? No. Because you took the time to learn how to do it yourself, or you asked a friend for help. Upholstery is no different.

If you're not one of the guys complaining about losing jobs to India and how everything you buy in the US is made in China and all the factories are moving overseas, etc, then you can send your money to another country for your car work. My "hypocrite" comment is aimed at those guys who ***** about US jobs and money going to Asia (something they have no control over), when they have no problem sending their money to Mexico (something they have 100% control over).

As the hippies say, think globally, act locally... or in other words, put up or shut up... put your money where your mouth is. Taking the cheap way out is why all our jobs are going overseas.

  30. NEWS FLASH !!!! the TJ tuck & roll guys are here in the states now .....at least here in Arizona..........so we are keepin the $$ in the USA
