Lookin at our Allison V1710's everyday got me to wondering how many guys used them in their dragsters or land speed racers. I have only ever seen a couple, Walt Arfonse's Green Monster, and there was a 33 or 34 sedan at Goodguys Indy a few years back on display. Anyone have any pics of some others?
Thought I would include some pics of our engines.

I forgot who the owner was but he is/was in Hawaii now. Had a 34 chopped and used like a funny car body. There was an article in Street Rodder quite a while back.

Yeah that sounds like the one I think it was a sedan.

  5. I think the tractor pullers grabbed all of them up they could find. There's one on the circuit now that has 2 of them on it. Pulls like hell!

This car ended up in Tucson. I imagine it's still in the hands of the same owner, who raced it for a short time, and then showed it locally in the '70s-'80s.

This car was called "Big Al".

There was an early Mustang funny car, a few Arfons cars, and maybe a couple more. Really only good for exhibition, after the '50s.

The coupe referenced atop belonged to Ray Alley, it was dubbed under his shop, The Engine Masters. The Mustang Flopper was owned by Hollywood stunt man, Tex Collins.

That guy's name was Jim Little. Not sure about the spelling. He built the First tilt bodied funny car,the chopped 34 sedan with the Allison engine that is now in The Garlits Museum. He also built the "Al-Setta", an Allison powered creation with a very short wheelbase, and an Isetta body drapped over it. He also built the "Quad-Al". FOUR Allison engines meshed at the flywheels, two driving the front wheels and two driving the rear wheels, double slicks on each corner with a Fiat Coupe body hung on the back. He also built a cab over White Truck with an Allison in the frame rails behind the cab. They were all featured in Rod & Custom back in the sixties. Pretty Wild Stuff !!!!!!

How about a 27 roadster for the street with an Allison. This belongs to a guy from Pittsburg, Kansas. This photo was taken about 30 years ago but I had heard that he still had it a couple of years ago.

I saw "Big Al" run at Irwindale in the late '60s. It only turned about 2 grand leaving the line, but with much fishtailing and tire smoke. Impressive!

There's a 55 Chev in Melbourne, 'fully street registered' with a 3000hp Merlin in her... Not exactly HAMB friendly, but anyway... Scroll down for the pics.

And there was a bloke over here cut an aircraft engine up with an angle grinder, either an Allison or a Merlin, and created a 300ci V twin to put in a motorbike frame. I saw a documentary on it, you should have seen it go, and the exhaust note was AWESOME!

    Cheers, Glen.
