So i email a local media blaster some pics of my T to see how much it would be to get just the body blasted. And i asked him for a quote on the murray also to see if maybe he would give me a better deal for more work. So he gives me a call back the other day. I was figuring a couple hundred bucks for everything but he tells me $900-$1200 for the T depending on how bad the rust is! And $150 per door plus $2000 for the shell and fenders on the murray! I mean i didnt even pay close to that for each car. Is this what i should expect to pay or is this guy just a whack job?

  2. Here in Spokane it runs 700.00 - 1000.00 for most cars. Inside and out, plastic media, green sand only on the rust.

You are paying the guys salary, the cost of sand or media, the rental on the property, his equipment, his insurance, his utilities, his licenses, and more, and you think he can afford to do this for $200?

Thats about the going price. Cost on those bags of media are between $6 and $10 each. To do a whole car inside and out it will take quite a few bags. Plus think of what one hour of labor costs at your local shop. People don't work for free you know. And those machines are expensive!

I paid about 1200.00 some 4 years back for my 29 sedan, and think this is about the going rate. 200 bucks would be insane!!!! I would'nt even touch it for that price, media is a real pain in the ***!!!

I understand all the overhead costs he has but i mean really, $2600 to get a car just blasted, no primer? Ive looked at some of the larger #300 blasters and theyre $1200 with everything. Ive got a big compressor, one of the two behind deals that puts out like 250cfm so i figure i could probly blast everything i have for the price of one car. Or just go back to my crud disks on the grinder and spend a few days cleaning it. So thanks for the input guys.

My shop gets $100/hr. When I'm doing it, it doesn't seem like enough.

I must of just gotten the deal of the century. I just picked up my 34' Ford truck doors and roof from a blaster in Flint, MI. All 3 pieces for $45 bucks. I didn't have them do the skins on the door seeing they're being replaced and only the roof top not underneath, but still. I was anticipating at least triple that. Even better, I just dropped them off at 3:eek:o yesterday and they were ready at 3:00 today.

  13. Not that I would want to pay those prices but you do need to be careful who you have do it. I've had friends that have gone through the nightmares of repairing what a bad bast job f**ked up. Warped sheet metal, dents, and one fibergl*** boat that the blaster made more then one hole completely through the hull. All of these were "great deals" until they got their **** back and had to fix all the carnage. Find a reputable shop and pay the going rate, it ain't cheep but it's better then the alternative. Good Luck.

I hate blasting...even more than having a car blasted. It just is not for me. A mess. I'll take a chemical strip any day. Those prices are maybe a lil steep, but if the guy's an "artist" with a blaster you could spend twice the difference over average prices in body work, in time or cash by going cheap. For what it's worth on the subject I like to do all of my metal work before stripping. Get's the welds nice and clean, as well as some other possible advantages. Good luck with your choice.

It seems its really a time issue. If ya want it smooth and no holes blowed in it then it takes a lot of time.
If ya just want it balsted and bent anyone can do it.
Around here there are three or four shops to do blasting. How great i want the part is the determining factor for where it goes.
I have some heavy steel stuff going to shop A tomorrow. Good price ( cheap) and quick turn around.
Have some more stuff that i want perfect ( body parts) then its off to the stripper.
Nice model a body ( mine) went to be soda blasted at another location.
Like one of the other posts stated after buying the equipment and doing one myself i would want 2000 to do a single door...:D

You get what you pay for. I used to think blasting was blasting and anybody can do it. A frame is one thing but body panels are another. I saw a hood blasted this summer by one of the best bodymen I know. He ****ed it up bad. Too much air pressure and he was trying to be careful. As in any trade it takes skill and the school of hard knocks to do the job right. Be careful what you do, nothing is cheap anymore....

That IS a good quote...however, the price you pay does not always guarantee that you will receive your money's worth. It is always good practice to know who you are dealing with and whether they can do the job to the standard you are paying for before you lay out the cash. Kinda like Bill Cosby said about gambling in Vegas..."the weight of your bet will not change your luck!"

Blasting takes a ****load of time and a little bit of skill.

The hourly is what is killing you there.

yep. Media , while not horribly expensive, can add up quick, if you use 10-15 bags to do a vehicle. Unit i have access to runs on $4.20 a gallon diesel. I can dial up the pressure & blast it quick if you want, just don't cry to me when your body man is mad as hell, trying to fix warped panels.. Hell, a good blast suit costs $100 bucks. I'm not sayin' every one does it this way, but if someone's going to make a living at it, ya gotta have the right equipment.

I gave it a try on the A and I'll never do it again. It's a huge mess and the shop was covered in media and so was I. Let someone else suffer the consequences of being the MAN.

Just buy a pressure pot sandblaster and have at it. Sure sand is a little more abrasive but I have done 10 cars and never warped a panel. I paid $250 bucks for the pressure pot, it was built by a local guy and have ran probably 50 bags of fine sand through it with no problem. Even if I paid $5 bag for all 50 bags and the blaster, I still am under 500 bucks.

I'm actually totally opposite. I won't have another car chemically dipped due to the fact that no matter how hard you try, you will not get all the chemicals out of the seams and that my friends, ends up causing more rust problems than the rot mother nature put there. Also, I like to do my work on clean steel and not fight the ****py welds caused by rust and paint.

You can do it yourself or pay someone else,,,,I did the 54 wagon,,every friggin peice of it!

    I used 30 bags of sand,,,,that's 3,000lbs!

    At about 8 bucks a bag,,,that's 240 bucks

I bought a medium size sandblaster for around 120 bucks and went to work,,,,

Having a big compressor is a must,,,which I already had,,and the desire to have beach front property in the upstate of South Carolina and a understanding wife when I came in the house with all the sand in the every crack known to man,,,

It is long and hard work,,,,I spent many,,,many hours on the car,,,

Yes it's expensive to pay someone to do it but they earn every dollar that they make,,,I wouln't do it for the public,,,it's HOT and hard work,

And lastly,,taking care of your lungs,,,the dust from sandblasting will kill. HRP

When I worked in a steel shop sand blasting was part of the job. We called it going to the beach plenty of wind and sand you supplied the water. We had a wooden cart with rubber wheels that we blasted on. No one told me to ground the work, Boy I learned about static electricity fast real fast.

Thats about what i was quoted for my A Coupe. **** THAT!

  27. Blasting near me is 1000 to 1500 for the last few quotes I had. The last chem dip I did was 800, but that was on a little tiny sprite. The basting seems easier to clean up. My sprite seeped some chemical for months out of some of the overlapped seams. the Dipped car did seem faster than the turn around at the blaster though.

I finished getting my truck running. All new drive train. My folks thought my truck needed paint, so every day my parents went out to sand the paint off of my truck. Took about a week. Funny, my Mom liked doing it. She said it was relaxing.

I understand that many unskilled laborers work for less $$$ per hour in California than in New Jersey......
