I have worked where I am for six years, started doing mechanical work, learned Hydraulics and moved to that and then decided to get my ARSE back into computers. I have some real good friends at work who were in the group I'm in now. They kept making me copies of the things I would need to know for what we do. When I went on installs I would hurry up and do my work and then hang with them to see how they do theirs. When the position I have came open, all the guys currently in it kept telling thier boss to talk to me about it. He had a hard time believing a mechanic could do the job. I was primed for the interview and got hired. Now, I am building Monster server cabinets with either five 8540r's or 6 975's. They are cool! The 975's have 6 hot swap scsi bays, Dual processors, redundant power. They come completely apart without tools so adding/removing components is simple. Alot of other features that I am just learning as they are new to us. I enjoy it and it will take me further around here than what I was doing. Not much call for someone specializing in simulator Hydraulics! I'm going to start school this fall for Computer Science. The company is going to pay for it and want to learn more about the Windows legacy stuff and get my MCSE. Lots to learn! RASHY
I kept getting "low virtual memory" notices whenever playing Battlefield Vietnam online. It (the game) would run kinda crappy sometimes too (I always thought it was just a slow server or something...). I didn't think it should, I'm on a homebuilt, Athlon 2400, 512MB PC2700 (333MhzFSB), with an ATI radeon 9800 pro 128, and a creative SB Live. Seems like a decently fast system to me, but just for a joke, I uprgraded to 1Gb of RAM, and Holy Crap!!! It's like a totally different computer!
" They come completely apart without tools so adding/removing components is simple." now if you can do that with hotrods you will be the next bill gates

Thanks Rashy! No certifications here, I just have to deal with this kind of stuff day in and day out. I started out as a paid hardware junky 5 years ago. But all of the OS's and business applications used in various companies I have done I.T. work for eventually draw you over. I still love hardware, but the day to day functional issues usually involve software support. What is your background? I read some of the posts but didn't get the whole scoop. I haven't had much chance to chime in here regarding rods so I thought I would print my manifesto on killing spyware instead! I have picked up some good auto info and decided to pay back to the collective knowledge pool any way I can.
Yeah I get to finish with this baby this week. Head node has 2 3.2Ghz processors and 3GB of RAM and 6 10kRPM SCSI drives, the 12 nodes have 2 3.2Ghz processors and 2GB of RAM and 2 10kRPM SCSI drives each. All running Linux and using Grid Engine to cluster them. It is used for genetic research. Kinda like having a multi engine dragster... But can I get it to play unreal 2004.
And I thought my old Altair and S-100 systems back in the 70's were hotrods! Anyone on here besides me ever program a computer with swapable diode matrix memory cards?
