new 283 breaking up at higher rpm, timing?

I just got my sled back up and running with a 283 replacing the old six, and it breaks up at higher rpm. It was worse and I could only give it 1/4 throttle but I tried all the jetting options in my edelbrock calibration kit, adjusted point gap and got it to just break up at the high rpm range.
I have my timing set at 14 deg right now, It seems to get better the more timing I add but the book I had called for 8 deg so I am hesitant to go anymore.
Any suggestions on what to do next or what is a acceptable timing setting?

Check to see if your vacuum advance is working , sounds like its not ....
keep your gun on the timing marks as you rev , and timing should advance with rev's .

Try setting your timing at 34-36 deg. total at approx 2200-2500 rpm.

This is what the dissy should do. If you set it there it won't start .
Leave your timing as is ....

Just checked and the advance is working fine, looks to be around 35 deg when revved up around 2500 rpm.

    Condenser maybe ?

  7. It`s probably your points bouncing. If they are stock replacements, the spring is usually light and you`ll get a high-rpm cut-out.

You can replace them with Mallory or Accel high performance points and that should do the trick.

point lobes look fine, I will try another condensor and some high quality points.

Make sure your plugs have the correct gap. The higher the compression the less the gap should be. I suspect you sre running 9to 1 or less, I would run around .032.
I've seen the wire going to the points break or wear through the insulation making the engine die with full advance.

Or make sure it's not running out of fuel. May be a fuel pump or a pluged filter.

  12. Could also just be a bad set of spark plugs....

wires/leads look good and getting plenty of fuel, It has new plugs but I will double check gap and inspect them.

    Thanks for all the input.

Did you check for total timing with the vacuum advance plugged?

How about the dwell? I've seen some motors really come to life when the dwell was corrected....

I think I got her straitened out, I put a new performance point & condensor set and set the points to specs and reset timing to 36 deg fully advanced and she runs all the way out with no stutter.
Thanks for all the help, now I just have to fix my damn oil leaking rear intake gasket, going to throw away the stupid rubber seal and just rtv the crap out of it.

The rubber seal will usually stay put if it is put in dry----no sealant, no nothin'.
