S-10 clip in a 50 Shoebox

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Anarchy Choppers, May 16, 2008.

  1. Ok I have done a lot of reading and I am thinking about using a S-10 clip on my 1950 Tudoor. It seems to work well and an easy mod. It seems to me that everyone who has done this is running a SBC.

Well I am going to keep my FATTIE, as they are great. Has anyone ran the S-10 front clip with a Flathead? I know I will have to build the motor mounts, not a problem. I am just wondering if I will have to modify the cross member or oil pan, any flywheel issues. Would like for it to be as painless as possible.

I just can not see spending $1000 on a front end, or $400 for drop spindles. I do intend on bagging her, 4 link in the back so I can take her low and slow.
But I am going to stroker to 276 and add a blower, just for the times I want her to sh*t is get.

Low and slow...you will have no choice with the flathead.

So just to sum up, $1k for all the front end shit to modify it for modern components is out of the question, but a stroker motor flathead running a blower that will cost thousands and thousands and still get pissed on by a mildly cammed SBC with iron heads from 7-11 is a good call...

Word? I have a strange suspicion there is a huge pompadour on your end of the internet.

  4. I really am Pro Sub Frame for the right reason. My 50 Merc and my 51 Vicky both have Nova Clips. I haven't had a chance to use a S-10 yet but it's just a matter of time.
What I don't understand is where your going with your project. Is your car missing everything up front? Dropped Spindles are good but not necessary if your baggin it.
I have a complete front susp. unit I cut off my car that is in good working shape. I'll make you a Hell of a deal. If you were loosing the Flat Head I'd be behind you 100% but personally I think the small benefit doesn't make up for the work your headed for.

A grand or so isnt much if you want to run a specific engine.

I did the S10 swap in my 51' but opted for a 302.......not nearly as cool as a flattie............

This isn't Pist-n-Broke's, but it is a '51 Vic with a Nova clip, narrowed 3" and stepped 4".

I agree with the others who said, if cost is an issue for you, forget the blown flathead. Been there, done that.

$1000 shouldn't even matter to you if you're going to build a stroked and blown flathead. That's not for the faint of heart or light of wallet.

And actually, you could drop 2 grand on that stock front end in the blink of an eye. Ask me how I know.

Next time I'll try an S10.

50fraud: wow that car looks great! I still have pics of it in my cell phone, it kinda shocks me when I see them cuz I'm like who's car is that?!? Talk about an example of how to build a car right!!!

  9. I have lot's of photo's of the chassis. I'd need to E-Mail them to someone smarter with a Computer than Me. 50 Frad's Vick with a clip narrowed 3" don't look like mine at all. I didn't narrow mine and didn't need to. My wheels are inside the fenders plenty with out it. That photo just looks Wrong. I used a 1969 unit. Mine's not as low in the back but about the same in front. I like it where it's at. I drive it pretty hard up here in the Mountains.
That steering box on the S-10 looks like trouble on the way. Been there with the T.A. clip I first put on my 50 Merc. Nova steering box is behind the axle center line, a much better way to go in these Fords and Mercs

    Hi Wizzard!

Why do you think the S10 box is trouble? Not that I have one, actually I did a volvo box swap, but I'm curious and I'd like to do an S10 swap in the future. Thanks!

Edit: Actually was thinking about you today as I bought a Mav. rear end I'm putting disc brakes on and I'm gonna have to remove the axles, and thought about how you taught me to do it! I'll pass that 3.31 on to the next guy that needs one :)

    Thanks very much.

  12. Johnny; On my 50 Merc the Trans Am steering box landed right in the bottom of my Core support, that led to radiator problems and when I got past that with lot's of $$$$ since I didn't tie the frame horns together as stock, the frame horn fractured in several places due to the steering box twisting it every time I turned the steering wheel. The Nova frame has the steering box in the rear and gives Zero interferance with core support and rad. Also was easier to re-mount the front bumper. When you look in my motor compartment most people don't have a Clue what's going on. I like it that way.
Glad to hear your making progress. You won't have any trouble passing on the gear set.

  13. Geezzz, I didn't mean what I said as a Knock. Your car is extreamly Nice. It just looks in the photo like the tire is right out against the fender. With the frame being narrowed I would have thought it would be in further.
    My appologies, The Wizzard

  15. Why yes ! do have a Pompadour, got to love the Murray's! My girlfriend thinks it is hot too.

As for running the FATTIE, they look good and sound great. Not building a race car. If I wanted a race car I would have kept my Road Runner.

Yes a grand on a front end is high if there is a way to do the same thing cheaper.

Yes my car is complete, I dorve it home. All I want to do is upgrade the front end and do away with the king pin set up. Run disk brakes for better stopping. I want to keep the org. flathead, as it is just going to be a cruiser.

Bottem line it is my car and I decide where I put my money. And I think it is better spent on building a nice Flathead. Hell why follow everyone else and drop a scb in it.

  16. Thanks for the offer, but the car is complete, I drove her home when I bought her. I just want to upgrade the front and get her setting right, with disk up front.

No apology necessary; no offense taken. The tires WERE right out against the fenders when the car went together, even with the narrowed clip. The front wheel wells were raised 2" to gain some clearance, and that changes the way the whole front of the car appears.

  18. Great looking Shoebox. looks like yours is coming together fine.

My email is MercMadness [at] Verizon [dot] net if you want to mail me pics. I just was curious how this works out as there is no Nova I know if that has a similar track width save for early style Novas maybe, and at that its just a guess. 62-67 I mean.

No, a flathead motor is sometimes called a FLATTIE. You must have heard it wrong...think about it, nothing fat about a flathead.

  25. The S-10 steering box ends up in a perfect spot, right behind the rad support.
This is by far the nicest fitting clip I think I've done on any car, and I've done lots.

  26. Isn't that a home-rolled funny cigarette?

The only thing I don't get in this whole thread is if the car runs and drives now, and is just supposed to be a cruiser, why the hell tear it all apart to change shit on it? If it had just been dragged out of the woods where it sat for 30 years... then it would make sense. If you wanted to go road racing or daily drive in rush hour traffic... that would make sense.

Don't they make a Mustang-II that's about a bolt in for one of these? Not cheap either, but no frame hacking.

    No, it's a Flatty.

Why not a little less time combing the pomp, and a little more time learning about these cars. There's more than just the lame rockasilly scene. Go figure.
