Can any one help me. I'm looking to run a (mechanical) Hillborn fuel injection on a small block Chevy, on the street, and i have a fair idea how to do it, but there are some areas in question. Like for starting the engine, I was thinking off a hand primer or eletric primer. Then, will a Hillborn fuel pump last on the road, and will it clear the water pump? I have helped set up a dragstar injetcion systom usiing pills, but it was for high speed tuning so the small block could be set up once and be reliable (I think!!) any help whith would be great. Thanks.
It will not clear the waterpump, it if it comes off the cam, but there are other ways to run a fuel pump A lot of guys have talked about doing it, but i dont know if any really are Is there anyone that does a lot of driving with Mechanical Hilborns on here??
go to top of page click on search ,then type in mechanical fuel injection lots of info. I am building a 434 chevy to run on hilborn injection on the street. I have a belt drive pump, bypasses, dial a jet,2 1/16 inch hilborn. My friend has a 383 with injection set up by Bailey bros spped shop in napa area. Haven't seen it yet but it was dynoed
wasnt the 57 and up Chevy fuelie cars mechanical? if they were then you should be able to do it. i know Hillborn is a completely different animal but the principle should be the same. ive seen several of them set up as a EFI and they look great, maybe one day i might try to use one.............
Hilborn injection is for WOT operation.......The problem is with the bypass type circuit........Bosch mechanical FI has provisions for idle, midrange and WOT operation that is not present on Hilborn injection.....I just don't think I'tll work on the street worhta shit.
rug buster is on the money ,but if you use a small set up like a 2\16 bores or smaller that helps lowend . also use a belt drive like on dirt late models and you can get there. look at speedways catalog many parts from short track racing works so much better than conventional rod shop stuff and cheaper ie brakes and rear end parts .good luck sprint 77
I have seen them run on the street and they seemed to get down the road ok. In my reasearch i figure this isnt for everyone but it can be done. I have two units we are putting together right now ( a flathead and a small port chevrolet) . The 350 chevy was just bolted to the engine stand last week and we have a couple projects in fromt of it. However we will get er running and then ito a hot rod for some stret testing this summer. My ace in the hole is i have a friend that does these systems ( owns his own dyno and hilborn flow bench and builds /flows them for a living) and has agreed to help work thru the bugs. I will start a thread when we first light it up o the stand.. My desire started a few years back when a area giy drove one on the street and after the hamb drags . (there was a couple that idled and drove very well ) It can be done but its going to take someunderstanding.
There are some systems that use modern electronically controlled port injectors installed in a hilborn, enderle or crower set-up.....if you have to do it, that's the way to proceed.
I've got a buddy who ran a Hilborn Injection on a 327 in his 4 speed 57 Chevy for quite a while. He told me that the fuel pressure is the most critical issue involved in that setup. He always ran 4 lbs., and if my memory serves me right, he had an electric fuel pump on it. Everybody thought he was nuts, but he managed to run it on the street for over a year like that. If I had the $$$$$$, I'd buy it from him! It's for sale, but it ain't cheap! Good luck with yours and remember: there will always be critics out there and those who are always telling you something just can't be done; ......I've got a word that I think describes them all real well. ...it's called "dream stealers"!!!!! Just do it!
Don't bother, if you set it up right no need to prime unless its been sitting a while. Yes Cam drive=No Belt Drive=Yes We've covered this many times before, and I've maintained that if you have to ask, the answer is no, you can't drive it on the street. David
I have a Hilborn lower drive manderal for the crank pulley. The pump mounts low and off to the side on a seperate bracket. I'll post a pic when I get to the shop in the a.m.>>>>.
