As you say, hard to tell from the photo. But if those valve covers sit flat, as it looks like they may, then it's a nailhead of course.

Deffinitely not a Nailhead...the heads (exhaust ports) are all wrong. My guess is Pontiac or Cadillac, but you can't really tell from that picture...

Look like center bolt valve covers, I'd vote for Olds.

Kind of looks like a Packard 352, they had valve covers like that and IIRC the exhaust manifold layout is similar.

looks like my 49 cad 331 they had center bolt valve covers for the first three months then switched to 4 bolt style.the filler/fuel pump neck is in the correct spot for cad also .lots of guys forget or dont know that the early production ohv caddys had these style valve covers! So the comparison to my engine makes my vote for early production caddy mill

im goin to go with a GM motor..im thinkin pontiac cause of the exhaust manifolds, i got a set in the garage that are simiar i believe but then it could be a chevy or olds or caddy or whatever cause they are all pretty much the same on a couple motors..

My vote is also on an early caddy. The shared-center exhaust ports that go out off the head combined with the filler/fuel pump located on top of the motor suggest this. Also, if you blow it up in an image-editing program, you can almost make-out the script on the valve covers. The other possibility would be Olds, but the script is wrong and the fuel-pump/filler neck are in the wrong place...

If I have to guess, it might be Olds, Caddy or Pontiac. Someone here will recognise the manifold. Certain eras it was the Caddy, other places or times it was Olds.

    That's an Olds exhaust manifold.
