Well, I dropped off my check to the post-office for $682.50 (To my grandfather) for a 1962 Corvair Monza Coupe. I was close to not buying it at all, being a Ford guy and having a taste for 1964- Corvairs, but I think I quite like the car.. Kinda quirky and goofy looking. Got a motor, transmission, everythings there, the body is straight, nothing short of new plugs, fluids, and tires is needed. All for 500 bones. http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=177678151&albumId=1495048 See if that link works. I shoved it on my myspace.. If not I'll upload onto photobucket.. I'm calling it "The (Other) One".. CoughDreadmanCough..
That's a great score for the price and the fact that it's gonna stay in the family is a bonus. Now about that color....
Not sure what I'ma do with the color, any ideas? And it wasn't my grandpas, he bought it from a friend. I'm partially using it to fund another project and tools.
Not bad at all. Surprisingly, there was a ton of stuff you could buy for these in the early 60's, they were popular to customize. Check the back ad pages of old 60's custom mags, there was always stuff for the "new" Corvair. I've had a '65 and a '66, both red Monza coupes with black bucket interiors. Would love to have another one some day.
You almost didn't buy it? And for that money? Dude, you gotta be thanking your stars you did! Don't think Corvairs weren't available In Australia, I love the vans. Are they usually this cheap?
Most Corvairs are dirt cheap, yeah. Like I said, I think I'm going to just go as far as maybe a rebuild on the engine and interior and paint before I sell it, which is really un-hamb like, but I can't even drive yet.
keep it till you can drive man , they are good on gas , and actually look cool.. lots of possibilitys dude!
What's wrong with bright red with a black interior? Sharpest corvair color combo IMO, unless maybe you're talking red with a white interior. Word to the wise, might wanna keep this one a low buck cruiser and enjoy it for what it is. Even with low buy in you won't be doing much fixing up on a corvair then turning a profit. Market for those cars is real soft and even a home paint job could eat your profit margin quickly. Good luck
I bought a Corvair Monza 4 speed car in college and use to drag the Chevy 6 cyl guys for beers. That car was really fun until you turned on the heater, then the inside smelled like exhaust fumes. Be careful in really hard cornering....they will start to slide and usually keep sliding to 360 degrees. they are hard to "catch up" to. Good luck on a great score.
Hey, meathead, how come I haven't seen these photos? Looks good bubba- When's Pawpaw bringin' it to you? I gotta run by that day. And one more thing... NATE'S GOT A CAR! NATE'S GOT A CAR! NATE'S GOT A CAR!!!!
And no, you can't borrow my engine hoist when you do the rebuild. (On Corvairs it's easier to drop the engine out the bottom...)
That's for sure. I was behind one at a stop light one day, when the light turned green, she took off. When she shifted into second the engine fell out onto the ground. Quite a sight...
I'd like to have seen that... on a similar note, a week or so ago I was sitting at a stoplight when a guy on a sportbike lane-split and got in front of me. No big deal, right? Well the light turns green and this cat shoots out, stands up on the pegs, looks over his shoulder. I think "Oh shit, this is gonna be a 'Super bikes' moment" and slow way down to give him room. He bounces on the pegs, grabs some throttle.....and.......wait for it......does the full ghost ride off the back of the bike. He is bouncing down the street like a ragdoll, and the bike goes over backwards and starts tumbling. Parts everywhere. It was a total yardsale by the time he and the bike were done tumbling. The funniest part was him doing the walk of shame with his busted-ass bike when he picked himself up.....
I ran into a guy that was on the Yenko Corvair team back in the day. He had a track prepped Yenko Corvair in his garage that he was putting back together. I got him talking and he just kept going...the best part were all the ways they would "cheat" by redesigning things like heads and whatnot. They would move the sparkplug hole to a more efficient spot and redesign the head around it... he races it on weekends in the vintage classes and claims to stomp the porsches and ferraris in the same class...I tend to believe him!
ya you bet and there's almost no end to the carbouration you can get for those things they are fun rides
