Did any companies besides ford and cadillac make flat head V8 in the old days? How did they differ from the other two?
I saw a 1930 Oakland four door and it had a flathead V-8, but it had both the exhaust and intake coming out of the top of the engine.
I've seen pictures of Cord V-8s in 50's hot rods (1st Hot Rod Magazine cover car I think). They have the exhaust exiting above the head next to the intake like the Caddy. Lincoln also made V-8s during the 20's until the 30's. Then they made a big 337 cid flathead to replace the V-12 that was used in the small pre-war Lincolns & Continentals in '49. The new V-8 looked like a Ford/Merc flatty on growth hormones. I'm sure Oakland made a V-8 as did several pre-war European luxury car companies.
you don't have a photo of the oakland do you?....the one we got didn't have the original motor in it when we got it
No, im sorry. Id seen it on ebay a couple weeks back. It was in awesome shape though for an unrestored car, the only thing it looked like it needed was a waxing and some new tires, all were flat.
It is strange that the Oakland comes up here. I had never heard of on euntil last friday when a co-worker showed up with a 1930 rag top on a trailer. This thing was sweet and ran like a top. I could have farted louder than the noise coming from this thing running. Apparently he was going to Carlisle for the weekend. I guess the Oaklands were GM products at some point? And I think it had an ohv 4 cylinder in it, but I may be wrong.
