We're pretty excited about these brand new frame bends - they're designed for rear kickups, center sections, frames, etc... perfect for home builders looking for a smooth bend that doesn't require special machinery.
They are shipped in four pieces which you weld together in five minutes. Because they're made from 3/16" (!) steel, when you grind the weld it will match up with the corner radius on 2x3 hollow structural tubing. Since they're four pieces, there are no kinks or stretching normally associated with mandrel bent rectangular tubing, especially being bent the "hard way".
The lines on the top and bottom are just scribe lines at 30 degrees, 45 degrees, and 60 degrees so they're easy to cut and replicate side to side.
The little tabs hold the plates corner to corner so you can clamp them together.
The bends are available bent the hard way and the easy way in 2x3 and 3x2. 2x4 is coming, possibly 2x5.

We made these diamond plates to strengthen the joint, too. Some guys were asking for one with a hole in the middle so they could weld on the inside too. Some guys put the plate on the inside of the rail and rosette weld them in place.

Retail is $48 for a 2" wide x 3" high bend, and $50 for a 3"wide and 2" high bend. HAMB alliance members get them for $43.20 and $45.

Thanks for your time. I'd love to hear your input!

Especially like the 100% penetration feature. You should sell a bunch of them.

Very nice time saver. What kind of steel are you using for the bends?

  6. Those bends are a great idea. I can picture using them so many different ways. I'm sure I'll be buying some soon!

Yes, they are 90* with a 4" inside radius.

That's pretty cool. I might be in the market for some of those soon.

What is the purpose of the 3 lines on them?

  11. I believe they are so it will make it easier to duplicate from side to side if you cut them. He said the marks are set at 30, 45, and 60 degrees.

Would these work for a boxed A frame? Obviously, it's boxed, but I wanna kick it up as well. Would the difference in sizes between the frame and the bends cause a stress point?

    yes please

Tim, I like things low too!

  14. Nice product, the tabs for clamping a neat idea, too. I do think the price is a little high, though, you can get a whole stick of 2x3 and have $ left over. If you offered two bends for that price it would be more do-able.

Are you thinking about the difference in thickness or the height of the rails vs. the bends?

Having a thicker corner isn't bad at all... I would be concerned if the corner was thinner than the rail. If you use the fish plates and overlap the gap, plus grind a chamfer on the tubes where they meet so it gets filled with weld, the joint is going to be really really strong.

If you have stock rails, at about 15" ahead of the rear crossmember they are 3" tall. That's where I'd cut them off so the bend will match right up. You could cut the bend at a 45* then add a straight section to get it up as high as you want it, then add the remaining 45* to the end so it's level again. Or if you want to go straight up you could do that too.

I hope I was able to help. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

So, I'd only have to buy 2 90-degree bends then? This is looking like a more and more attractive solution. I wonder how well that 45-degree angle will work with the trunk of my coupe. I guess it all depends on how much kickup I run. Thanks for your help.

I think you're going to have to modify the trunk in any case if you kick up the frame... like you said, the more you kick, the more you cut!

Would anyone object to me turning this into a Welder Series new/helpful products thread? I'm not talking about plastering it every day with annoying posts, just showing some new stuff that we're starting to put out, as well as some really helpful parts for home builders. It would keep it all to one thread, instead of starting a new thread every once in a while.

I'd like to hear your feedback...

Here's an assembly video I did on the frame bends. If you don't get my Things To Do With A Bracket newsletter, you wouldn't know that until the end of April '08, they are only $40 each. But like I said, if you don't get the newsletter, you wouldn't know that.

I understand your concern with plastering up the place with new threads, but I bet they are more relevant to this board than many other threads anyway (yeah, including my own...). Start a new thread for each one, I say. That way, for daily viewers, you'll more than likely take note of the new "builder series" thread.

Looks like a great, and very stout, new product, cool.

I really wish I had seen these when I built my frame. These are awesome. Any news on the 2x6 or 2x5 versions?

    Thanks!
We'll be doing a 2x5 "vertical" curve (for a 5" tall rail, curved up) but sorry, no plans for 2x6 at the moment.

Finally got around to starting a display for the new products area at Louisville... I cut one bend into three 30* pieces. I'm going to go up 45* out of this piece, then a horizontal 90* to simulate a rear crossmember. Once it's all painted, I think it'll look killer!
