No matter what you run, stock , petronix or something else, any true rodder carries a few spares around in the trunk. Ignitions, starters, plugs, fuel pumps, etc. if you're on a long drive you take extras.

  2. You know it's funny, we used to say "How can you tell a street rodder from a Hot Rodder?" - Look in the trunk if there's tools he's a hot rodder, if there lawn chairs he's street rodder ....

    LOL!

Isn't is sacrilegious not to carry a "save-yer-own-a$$ kit"?

Hell yeah, carry spare parts too, no matter what ignition you have! I run a pertronix in most of my toys, and have a side compartment setup with WAY more spare crap than I need. (I'm one of those a little paranoid types, I wanna be able to fix ANYTHING that might happen on the road) I got my extra points setup stashed in there along with extra belts, hoses, a spare alt even. Hell, I'd carry 2 spare tires if I had the room. I guess I'm a little more paranoid than I thought... Heh heh...

I was running the first series pertronix ignitor and flame-thrower coil. In my 66 Mustang stock distributer and alternator. The coil failed after a year. Replaced all with the Pertronix ignitor II and Flame-thrower II coil. The ignitor failed after a few months sent it back in to Pertronix. They replaced it with the same model, it lasted another 5-6 months and then failed again.

Put stock points and coil back in and have had no problems.

    Just my .02

Ha! Ha! Wow, what a debate...without starting this thread over... does 'pertronix' make a huge difference for cold starts in the morning compared to points? Its something I was considering for that reason. Other than that, unless there is some major benefit, adjusting the points isn't that big of a deal...though its a pain not loosing the screws when replacing them. Seems it would be easier having a spare in the glove-box on road trips than trying to replace 'pertronix'.

  8. I put a PerTronix in my 63 Falcon with a 302. The first thing I noticed over the points was that it started much quicker - first click of the key versus holding for a while with the points. I have used them for 30 years and have Never experienced a failure nor do i carry a spare. Currently have in a unit in the falcon, the '32 (complete plug N Play Dist), and the 56 T Bird. IMHO

An MSD box (worth every bit of the $200+ new, or $175 new, in-box on Craigslist) is what makes for the hotter spark for easy cold starts in the morning. :)
