Do these old cars care about you as much as you care about them???

I love my cars but lately I don't think they feel the same...I think we may use this long weekend to get reacquainted.

My wagon was under an exposed pole barn since '82 when I first heard about it in '04. The previous owner had intended to chop it up to make some weird "Americana" sculpture **** out of it. But he soon realized it didn't have a lot of the details of earlier '50s cars and just let it sit.

    And rot.

It cost me more to get it to Texas from Florida than it cost to buy the car. I worked on it off and on ever since but now that it's on the road, you can really tell it's excited to be driving around again. It's almost palpable. My dad went for his first ride in the car, and as I shut the engine off, he said "I think she's happy." Kind of weird.

It's been incredibly reliable so far. I've put over 2500 miles on it in six weeks with the only issues being a carb leak and the shifter going out of adjustment. I'm happy too, haha.

Since I got the T and the weather has been nice the old Pontiac has just been sitting gathering dust.

I backed it out the other day so the plumber could do some work and felt guilty and washed it, and took it out for a spin, "just the two of us" lol

Yea, they work on your head a bit.

So, this is the **** you think of when you're not out to arrest me, eh?! :D

Ha Ha...you're onto something, though...but unfortunately there can sometimes be a language barrier. My heap speaks German, and I am far from fluent, although we get our points across without words more often than not.

She's just scared right now. Last time she was out on any public roadway, SUVs were a curious oddity, the roads didn't look like minefields the morning after, and traffic was much lighter. It'll take a while to convince her that even in her tired, neglected, run-down state...she's got more than enough spirit to out-cl*** the lifeless, half-plastic zombie-mobiles out there.

Our first "drive" only took us a couple blocks in each direction, and though timid, she handled it okay. The next time, when we tried to go further, she took one look at Gratiot with all that traffic and a cop car with the red and blues on and just shut right down! Had to push her back to the garage and start digging in to build up her confidence with a fresh dose of at***ude. Once she can intimidate OTHER cars, she'll be okay out on the road!!

Ha Ha...our relationship hasn't been picture perfect or smooth sailing thus far, and I never saw myself falling for anything like her, but it all seems okay when the garage is dead quiet and she whispers "du bist meine libre", or something like that??

Whatever...I just drink another Miller Lite and raise a toast her way now and then. Maybe next time I'll buy a six of Heineken???

I think like the new Caddilac commercial....." When you turn your car on does it return the favor?" Mine sure does !

Maybe the '56 is still stewing about the new red dress you made her wear. ;) :D

My last car (the 51) was a mean old *******, hated to get worked on and let me know it. It cut me, hit me, and fought me on everything I did to it. That said, it loved to go, it was loud, smelly, and rough but it ran, and never stranded me.
The wagon is a beatuy of a car and so far working on it and driving it have been great. This weekend we are going to Dayton, a nice long trip, so we'll really get to know each other.

For those curious about car love: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/2000899/Man-admits-%27having-***%27-with-1,000-cars.html

...and yes, all three of mine (2 dailys, and the Biscayne) all have personalities. The Biscayne at some points loves being worked on when he knows an upgrade is happening. But, if it's routine stuff or just dinking around, he's all piss'n'vinegar. What's more, now the Aurora and the Biscayne are colluding to ensure I have at least vehicle on "project" status at all times; thankfully, the wife's car doesn't listen to them, or at least doesn't want to join the club.

i was just thinking about all this a week or so ago when i was coming to grips with getting rid of my olds. i know she's not a hamb friendly car but me and her have been around. 18 states, two trips across the country, my first car show as more than a spectator, my first engine and trans rebuilds, my first pretty much everything. haven't really been able to drive her more than a few times over the last year due to engine then trans problems. replaced the tired 307 with a healthy 455 and the trans dies. well now i've got the model a and realized that there's just not room for her in my life anymore.

went out and sat in her for about an hour reminiscing about the times we had. told her about the direction i was going with things and that i just couldn't have another car sitting around not running anymore since i'm taking the big block out for the model a. it was rough, and even typing this i get a little lump in my throat. old cars do have souls, i don't care what anyone says to the contrary. she relented and accepted her new path, whatever it may be, and let me know. glad i'm not the only one who can listen to their cars like this...hell, my wife has even started understanding their language now. :D

Mine's a *****. The good kind of dirty ***** that keeps me in check.

She does what she wants and gets her way with me... I try to love her and I leave bleeding and sore usually with a broken tool and covered in her juices.

She lets me ride in her once in a while and I pretend I like it. Truthfully, I'm more of a p***enger along for the ride. She bucks and snorts and I just do my best to hold on. She's the one that has all the fun and I just try to keep up.

Sometimes I think she's too much for me, then sometimes I realize I have the keys to turn her on, then it's my turn to play the boss.

My Stude lets me know when its pissed. If I thrash on it even a little bit, she'll make sure I end up having to sweet talk her with a quiet night together in the garage.

Great thread. Anyone that "doesn't get it" needs to read this.

  15. My '60 caddy and I have come to an agreement, she will run if I leave her in the yard. (she wishes to retire, but i won't let her).
My Willys Jeep truck is okay with being a 'frankenstien' so long as I fire him up often.
There are others with stories in this yard, but yes, they do communicate by action or lack thereof.

  16. Well yeah, hell yeah they care or don't care. A couple of years ago I lit out to California from Florida on my old '84 Goldwing. I was 65 at the time. I needed to do this before me and the Honda got too old. I figured I'd do this thing then come back and trade "Old Blue" for a newer bike. Well after 6500 miles and not missing a beat for a month, hell, there was no way I could get rid of it. It's sittin' out in the shed now, haven't been on it in awhile but there's no way to trade it off or sell it. I've had my '56 Ford since February and haven't had time to bond yet. I have had my F-250 truck since it was brand new 16 and a half years ago. I've bonded there, we've been through a ton together. Yep, I'd say our "toys" have souls .. of course they do!
