So, I have been actively searching for over a year for a magneto for my 235 chevrolet (54 vintage). I finally bought one, (54BOMB) found it on ebay. Guy said 60's speed piece 235 chevy. Got it today and i run the number it says it fits 292 GMC. It has a original brown bake-o-lite cap, so i don't know how it could fit something so late model. So i was hoping the base doesn't match the body. Or do 292 and 235 take the same distributor???
To the best of my knowledge, ALL those magnetos/distributors interchange between the Chevy and GMC sixes. Since I'm also on the lookout for various pieces to build a GMC 302, I'd be very interested to know if in fact this is gospel, as I have a line on a couple Chevy sixes I'm gonna strip some parts off of.
They can. I think there is a slip collar on heis that needs removed, and then it drops in. Turn that on a lathe or maybe fit it to a different collar.
Very cool mag!!! I have never seen one for a 6 before. Anyone happen to have a stock 235 intake laying around that they would part with? PM me please.
Whether or not the 292 has the same distributor as the 235 doesn't matter. I did look in my records and it appears the 235 is the same as the 270 and the pre-'62 302 but different than the '62+ 292. The 292 is the same as the 230 and 250. The scintilla/vertex mag can have the base and advance curve changed to fit the motor. The real kicker is you found a 6-cylinder mag to work with. A couple of good mag shops you might want to check are Don Zig in LA, Mason Racing Ignitions in PA, or Art Moose in IA. I can probably find a number for them if you need it.
You can modify the 194/230/250/292 dizzys to fit the earlier 216/235/261. Just lay the two next to each other and you will see what needs to be done. The collar needs to be higher, and the end of the shaft will need to be shortened a little. GMC and Chevy used the same dizzys.
