Just have a few questions about them. What steering boxes are easy to convert for the side exit? Instead of using a actual spring car box. Ive heard something about a toyota steering box. Anybody have any suggestions? Also some pics would be great.
Well, remember that whatever steering box you use will but under the dash and very visable. I would use a Schroeder unit from a race car mainly 'cause it looks cool and racey. A regular box under the dash might look out of place, and unattractive.. Just my 2 cents.
Ya, ive been looking around and talking to some old hot rodders, and they say try to use a regular box becuase the race or sprint car boxes are quick ratio's. So i was just trying to see what some ppl have done
Mopar manual box from an A body....(Dart, Demon, Duster etc) Dont have to reverse it and it doesnt look too ****py to the visible eye....
Dad and I were talking about this yesterday. If I remember right the sixtys and seventies sprint steering boxes were modified GM Saginaw boxes.
Check some prior thread. Someone had done an excellent tech thread on how to do this using a manual steering Ford Ranger steering box.
I agree, a compact good looking box, especially if you detail or polish it, but even though it has the correct rotation, you'll probably need to extend the sector shaft to mount the pitman arm outside the body. Several good HAMB threads on how to use these recently, do a search.
I used a Mopar box on mine. The good thing is that on a "T", "A" or even a '32, you will not need to lengthen the output shaft because the new pitman arm will not extend any further than the stock Mopar pitman arm.
Schroeder does have a reducer that gives better ratios (12:1 or 16:1) for street use. http://www.schroedersteering.com/HotRodSteeringPg.html
I have been bombing around town a little bit, and I am actual getting used to the quick ratio. Its pretty tight inside my 23 T and wouldn't want to have to turn the wheel a lot of times just to make turns. its like a little go kart.
