    Alex,

Is it an entire pertronix dizzy or just the module?
I have a pertronix dist. on my 34 and have re built it twice due to slipping.

Common sign would be the ability to move the cap & body independant from the shaft a few degrees. So you can set timing nuts on, but as soon as your run n' gun the torque throws you off a few degrees. In my case just starting the engine would time me out.

The top crown/body is machined independant from the shaft. they are held together via four screws deep inside the unit under the rotor. Some times those screws loosen causing it to turn.

Take the entire unit apart, find the screws, add some blue loc tight, tighten and reassemble.

Hope this is not the case.

  2. First memo says you have no power. That would be seperate problem from out of time. With Pertronix in a 60 Ford you need to have the Ballast resistor in the system if you are using a stock Ford coil. The red wire goes to the incoming 12v side. The black wire goes to the Neg side of the coil. If you bypassed the Ballest you cooked the Coil.

    ^^^Good point^^^
Still curious though if you are running a pertonix coil too.
They claim to have no need for a balast resitor (it's internal) with that set up.

    bump & sending positive thoughts

Does it run smooth but no power, or buck around?
I'm thinking "no" on the timing chain and "yes" on swapping the distributater with whatever a local auto parts has that fits it.

...but on the other hand Pertronix makes an awesome coil with ballast resistor in it

  8. Bump!!!! I Hope you guys get it fingered out!!! Keep us informed on what happens. Sum of us are too damn far away to make it this year :(

The only verifiable problems I have heard about the Pertronix ignitions are when people connect them to a source that is not a full 12 volts, in other words through a ballast resistor.

The white stone thingy on a Chrysler firewall is a ballast resistor. The pink wire coming off the ignition switch on a '60s Ford is a ballast resistor. This really can't be repeated too often, but the Pertronix needs a full 12 volts, not the dropped 8 or 9 volts coming off a ballast resistor. It will run, but it won't run right. The pink wire connects to the ignition switch with bullet connectors, what I do is make a wire with a forked end that has a male bullet on one side of the fork, and a female bullet on the other side of the fork. Plug this new wire inline, in between the pink wire and the 12v wire it connects to on the switch harness. Run the new switched 12v source you just made to the red wire on the Pertronix, and connect it. The coil is still connected to the resisted wire, like it always was, because it needs to be; as stated earlier, 12 volts to the original Ford coil will burn it out in a short time.

We are putting together a '36 chev coupe using a petronix unit and it would start either. Turned out the ground wire from the dist to block was not hooked up. hooked it up started right up. Just a thought.

The car was running, just not running good. It idles smoothly but on the road it had no power and started knocking and stuff..... we put a timing light on it up here and it was off a little and we got it lined up on the mark but it didn't help much.

I think they are going to try and trailer it to the show. It runs, just not well enough to travel down the 5 for three+ hours.

Check the vacuum advance on the distributor. Ford did some crazy things on some of the motors in that time. Had a 6 cylinder that only had vacuum advance, no mechanical advance. It would run but no power and the exhaust manifolds would glow red. Just a thought.

  15. put points back on it and see what happens. looking at the other starliner post it looks like you guys arent running the flamethrower coil. the one you have probably isnt the right ohms & the pertronix aint throwing a good enough spark. also make sure the vacuum diaphragm in the distributor isnt shot. suck on the hose and make sure its working properly.

    Have you...
    Checked for a good ground?
    Does it have spark?
    Does it have fuel?
Does the battery have enough charge?
Is the starter good? Is it dragging?
Pull off the vacuum advance, plug it at the carb... you don't need it to start.
If the timing chain jumped a tooth, move the wires one position over on the cap.
If the timing is off, make sure the balancer hasn't spun.
If its already run once... think basic... start simple.

  24. Aaaa, Now we get "The Rest of the Story" So it wasn't running fine and just lost Fire. Obviously you know what your doing and this Last minet Thrash got you turned sideways. If it were Me in your spot I'd just stop where I'm at for now. Get the weekend behind you regaurdless what that intales and then get the car back to the Shop. Start with the Basics and do one thing at a time. This isn't the first Car not to be driven to a major event due to 11th hour Thrash Crash. It's going to be something simple and you'll go "Why the Fuck didn't I see that"?

run but knocks and won't idle? Check for a loose rocker or one that's out of adjustment.

Thats how fords are suposed to run! Seriously though your starliner is a knockout. I think your cam is installed 1 tooth off. My friend had an olds which acted identical to yours, no power, pinged, ran like the the ignition timing was way retarded except pinged like it was advanced.
