Well, I will get this started. I have a 1961 235. It is slated to go into a traditional 33 chevy 5 window coupe. I wanted an overdrive and a manual. Here is what I have; Early to mid 90s 5 speed borg warner from a Camaro or S-10 bolts right up to the '61 stovebolt bell housing. (mine is from a 87-89 Camaro IROC)The input shaft works into the crank bushing, as I recall. I found a Corvette (C-3 68-82) clutch disc works on the borg warner spline and the pressure plate bolts to the 6 cylinder flywheel. The big difference in the S-10 and Camaro transmissions is location of the shifter. Housings and parts interchange between the two. Camaro has shifter at tail of trans, S-10 near the middle. The Camaro trans mouts to the engine at an angle. It is rotated on the bell housing - I think this is reflected in the tail housing design - but don't recall - Anyone remember? If you want an automatic, The guys at Stovebolt 6 have a plate to get that done. Check out: http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/index1.htm

The only automatics that "just bolt up" without the $350 adapter are the '50-62 iron powerglides that were originally behind a 235 (V8 ones are different) or, if you can find one, a 4spd hydromatic from a truck 54-?? in Chevies, 51?-?? in GMC's. Manual ******, if you use a 235/261 bellhousing from a 55-62 car or 48-59 truck, you can use any 3, 4 or 5 spd GM ****** you want to, as long as it has a 4 11/16" input collar diameter and the standard Chevy bolt pattern. Clutch disc depends on spline count and diameter available, but it's all doable.
I have a 87 2wd s10 t5, 55-57 car bellhousing, 82 2wd jeep clutch disc, late 60s chevy throwout bearing, stock fork, 62 chevy flywheel and starter. you can not mix 6volt (54 and older) with 12volt (55 and later) flywheel/ starters. I can lay rubber in 3 gears and cruise at 90 with a stock 235. You can't say that about a stock powerglide.
Saginaw 3 speed with a Hurst mistery shifter. If ya really wanna be trad 3 by the knee is the best option for that old wheezer. ( I think the Ravin has a couple of 'em and more than one option on ol shifters)
hey yall thanks for the help!!! 53sled:::: sound like one hell of a combo!!! i'll copy kat if you dont mind... some of this laundry list i might have all ready!!!
hey yall thanks for the help!!! 1 more Q: do this "******/235" setups also work on 216's??? i think i might run this ol 216 instead!!!
I believe the same trans for 235s will work for 216s. May have to change the bellhousing if your going from 3 spd/4spd to Powerglide or visa versa.
If yer thinking of goint the route of a Babbit Bearing 216 Chev in an old Dodge i would suggest this option. Find an old MoPar Flathead 6 and set the car up with that !!! Them Flathead MoPar's are faster than a 216, Have full pressure oil & insert bearings. MUCH better engine than a 216... I know a few people that run them in '40s Plymouths and they will run down the HiWay at 85 all day long !
