found this on craigslist yesterday, picked it up today. he had it listed high, 'made what I thought a reasonable offer and here it is. I have 303s, 371s and 394s this is the only 324 in the present collection story is it was in a '40 Ford Coupe put together in the fifties car was wrecked and motor pulled about 16 years ago looks like it was stored semi covered outside Beylond headers are toast, motor is froze up solid but most everything else looks salvageable.
couple more pictures, pulled a cover to find genuine Olds adjustable rockers, and the starter switch over is dual pattern, no starter but it looks like the one that came off was for the smaller flywheel, I see an aluminum flywheel and oil filter block off.. makes me wonder what else is inside this little hot rod motor..
surprisingly clean and rust free under the pan some serious holes drilled in the counter-weights make it look like the crankshaft was ballanced and some stout looking pistons forged? in the cylinders..
Take it apart clean it out and make it purr again, nothing like a original hot rod motor to power yours. I would keep those headers around for some wall art or at least sell them to a crazy fabricator that wants to fix them up.
Paul, Those pistons look just like the ones in the 324 I picked up some time ago. If so they are Jahns cast aluminum. mine has a 6X2 weiand Intake (2 pc, log type) with 94's and a vertex mag. I also got the stock 4bbl and intake and the stock distributer. I've got no plans for mine but it sure makes a great display engine. Looks like you hit the jackpot with yours. Frank
Great find. I had several Olds powered Fords in the 50's and 60's. Good motors, and fast as hell. Never knew Olds had factory adj rocker arms. We used to buy Thomas, McGirk etc. Hope it's savable Ron
pulled the linkage off the carbs, soaked them real good with WD40 then gently worked the throttle shafts and got all three moving smothly one large logo 97, one small logo 97 and one no logo 97 Frank, closer look these pistons do look cast. shoprat, adjustable rockers came on the '57-'58 371 J2 solid lifter motors only and these look exactly like the ones on my J2
If you "do the math" on individual parts sold on ebay.....yikes. The edelbrock is more than likely going to get swapped I'll bet
I was going to say that the pistons look like Jahns pistons to me also, I've got several sets (not Olds) that look really similar. Nice score!
Paul good find! I like the 50 Olds gearbox with the torque tube! I too have a set of those rockers. Wonder what the cam is? I have a Engle #45 and when I contacted them about it they said it was probably ground by the man himself. What heads did you get with it #8--#10's. The only thing it's missin is the Harmon-Collins or Vertex mag.
and the sad truth, this is what I expected, judging by the surface rust on the outside and no aircleaners I expected to see serious water damage in at least two cylinders high compression pistons and no ridge at the top of the cylinders means this poor motor had few miles on it when it was put outside to rust.. the cam looks like a reground stock piece from the top lifters look like stock hydraulics with their guts removed.. cylinders measure at 3.935" making it a .060 over 324 could probably clean these bores with a .125 over but more likely this block has seen it's day.
man, thats a shame... but what the hell. got some sweet bolt on's out of the deal, and has been mentioned the price of the stuff on eblast
Don't feel bad Paul I think alot of us have been bitten by the lack of blood going to our brains when we find something cool. Never the less. You did come out with some cool stuff. You could get those cylinders sleeved. I wish everyone had a machinist like mine--$60 a hole. The trans is worth it by it's self.
ohhhh, a rocket. I am getting to like these motors of late. have got one myself, and a nice tripower two. I love old motors with multiple carbs. that does look like it was a real hot rod motor. nice score.
