    KEITH, MIGUEL HERNANDEZ
Rank and organization: Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, Combined Action platoon 1-3-2, 111 Marine Amphibious Force. place and date: Quang Ngai province, Republic of Vietnam, 8 May 1970. Entered service at: Omaha, Nebr. Born: 2 June 1951, San Antonio, Tex. Citation: For con****uous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a machine gunner with Combined Action platoon 1-3-2. During the early morning L/Cpl. Keith was seriously wounded when his platoon was subjected to a heavy ground attack by a greatly outnumbering enemy force. Despite his painful wounds, he ran across the fire-swept terrain to check the security of vital defensive positions and then, while completely exposed to view, proceeded to deliver a hail of devastating machine gun fire against the enemy. Determined to stop 5 of the enemy soldiers approaching the command post, he rushed forward, firing as he advanced. He succeeded in disposing of 3 of the attackers and in dispersing the remaining 2. At this point, a grenade detonated near L/Cpl. Keith, knocking him to the ground and inflicting further severe wounds. Fighting pain and weakness from loss of blood, he again braved the concentrated hostile fire to charge an estimated 25 enemy soldiers who were m***ing to attack. The vigor of his ***ault and his well-placed fire eliminated 4 of the enemy soldiers while the remainder fled for cover. During this valiant effort, he was mortally wounded by an enemy soldier. By his courageous and inspiring performance in the face of almost overwhelming odds, L/Cpl. Keith contributed in large measure to the success of his platoon in routing a numerically superior enemy force, and upheld the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the U.S. Naval Service.

Can't believe that post would be deleted on any forum.
That's the point of memorial day, to remember, period.
When people are out in the sun working on the hot rod, on Monday, they should remember the reason they can is because of guys like that.

My grandad was 29th Inf Div, 1st wave ***ault on Omaha Beach June 6 1944.
He lost his best friend, right beside him on the beach, that day.
    6 months after that **** he reenlisted.
He went on to recieve 7 purple hearts, 2 Bronze Stars and a Silver Stars.
He followed the unit until he was shot 5 times in the chest all at once earning his seventh Purple Heart and a Silver Star.
Those wounds sent him home, where he recovered, and fathered 4 children including my father.
The 6 others were for schrapnel, bayonet wounds and a dog bite.
He gave me the bayonet that he was stabbed by, because he took it by lethal force, from the guy carrying it and brought it home.
It has seven notches on the handle.
Dad did one tour in Nam.
Other grandad didn't talk about the war as he saw firsthand the atrocities at Auschwitz.
Step grandad was a Diesel Boat Submariner from WWII.
I was a submarine diver during Desert Storm.
I'm 6th generation military with relatives back to the Civil War.
This is not a political or religious issue and anyone trying to turn it into one should keep their opinions to themselves.
They should ask themselves what they would do running up that beach.
    Remember Saving Private Ryan.
That was 29th Inf Div as well as several Ranger companies.

  10. Instead of going stright out to the garage to work on the hot rod, or going to the beach or the water park or whatever, try stopping by a national cemetary and do a little walking. Stop, think, ponder, remember and thank them.

Then go have a blast. That is what they would want you to do. But thank them first. And remember:

You haven't lived until youve almost died, for those who have fought for it, life has a meaning that the protected will never know

Parades will be marched, many flags will unfurl,

Old soldiers, family and friends will gather at the cemetery,

Where speeches will be softly spoken of those who kept us free.

A gun salute will toll, in memory of those who fell.

So on this Memorial Holiday, my hand above my heart,
I join in remembering those who served so well.

I am the first person in my family in many years to join the military. I have been deployed to Afghanistain where I was wounded by an 82mm mortar round that unfortunately killed a young man. The ***istant Commandant of the Marine Corps flew to Afghanistan to award me the Purple Heart. I was also deployed last year to the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. You might have seen on the news about the Marines that "slaughtered" civilians in the city of Haditha. That was the unit that we replaced. I lost a lot of very close friends during that deployment to IED's, gunfights, and one of my closest friends was shot in the head by an enemy sniper. That was the worst day I've had in a long time. I know he loved his job and did it with pride just like the thousands of others that have gone before us, but it still hurts when I think about it. Thank all of you that have served before me. It is your legacy that I carry on.

We have three kids in the service of our country. One who came home from Iraq in February.

I am remembering those parents who haven't been so fortunate on this long weekend.

Thanks to all who serve and those who keep the home fires burning and wait.

I almost breezed over this post because I thought it had something to do about you taking a spin in someone else's hot rod. And in a way, it is just that, but in a much more personal and meaningful way. I'm glad I didn't miss my chance to read this thread and remember to salute those who did and do the dirty work we all reap the benefits of.
    Thank you.

I make it a point to thank a member of the Armed Forces past or present every chance I get.

Now for a minor rant.......... So far I'm the only house on my street, which happens to be a mile long stretch of US Hwy. 67, flying a flag. What the Hell is wrong with that picture?!

I would appreciate it if this goes no further than to pay respect to those who deserve it.Please leave it at that or the post will disappear

There is a small ball park just south of the South Omaha Projects. The ''BRICKS'' are what they are called,it's the poorest part of Omaha. It's where my family came from.I played there as a kid. That small ball park is now named Miguel Hernandez Kieth Field. You won't find much to brag on there.Monday I will go there and light the smoking lamp.I'll have a cigarette and will let one burn through for Miguel. You would of had to know him,he would be our ashtray so the rest of us could smoke. He, and those like him, are why I, and all my brothers, always will be United States Marines.

Had something very cool happen today.
I have a few military stickers on the back of my truck and got thumbs up from 2 people today.
Goes to show that people are thinking about the vets and the military right now.
One of the 2 caught up with me, at the stoplight, on his Harley.
He had his wife on the back and they both thanked me for serving.
Even means a lot more as there are a ton of bases and military personnel in the area.
Pretty cool for people to take the extra effort in an area where they are used to seeing military folks and veterans all the time.

My uncle was my inspiration to serve, he IS a WW2, Korean,AND Viet Nam veteran. My son was in this latest gulf unpleasantness. My only consternation then was that I couldn't be with him.
At my high school cl*** website, our web guy does great things on Holiday's, and this one is no different. They have the history of Memorial day, plus the song Willie McBride playing. It's worth a look and a listen if you'd care to...cchs1972.com I think; maybe .org
