I got the new 262/272 cam in my 307 SBC and I'm having a friend turn the cam with a wrench while I adjust the rockers and he snapped one of the cam bolts! What the fuck do I do now? Can I drill the bolt out? how much will it cost to have a machine shop drill it out?

You can probably try to walk it out after removing the gear. If it is above the surface of the cam face try grabbing it with vice grips. If it is below the surface, try using a pick to try and turn it. With the head broken off there should not be any tension on the bolt. If you used loc-tight a little heat might help. Get a tool to rotate if from the crank after you get it fixed.

  3. I did the same think once. I tig welded a jam nut to it, bingo it came put even thought it hat loctite on it. The heat form welding loosened up the lock tite. If yom be verry careful of splater

Bigchuck is right once you get that problem fixed, turn the motor over using the crank!!! The best method for getting a broken bolt out is use a 1/8 drill bit drill into the bolt and use an easy out. You can pick them up at any hardware or parts store. Good luck

I have drilled a series of holes across the bolt and used a flat screwdriver to remove. I did this a bunch on aircraft phillips head screws. Were you having the whole engine turned from the cam bolt? You must have the engine together to be setting the valves. The valves will hit the pistons if you just turn the cam and not the crank? I would pull the cam so no trash in engine. Really wish you good luck!

What amazes me is that you state that you were having your friend bar the engine for you in this manner but he snapped the bolt, when he was only doing what you apparently requested. If you want to blame someone, look in the mirror. Congrats, you've learned how not to bar an engine over.
