Alright, so my Poncho 400 runs great now, but whenever I turn off the switch the motor's still running...someone mentioned hooking up a dash light and the switch will work, but I'm thinking either the switch is fried or something like that, any advice?

did you just wire it . ive done this before the coil wire is on the wrong spot on the ING, but thats only if you just set it up

It's all new wiring, I'll make sure to check that tomorrow...anyone else have any ideas?

Did you put an MSD box on it?

  5. your alternator may be back feeding into the ignition ...how is it wired? is it a 3 wire alt? you may need to add a diode

if you turn off the ignition and you stop the motor..i ***ume by pulling the coil wire....is there still power to the coil?

It's a 3 wire alternator, red and white wires on the plug-in and main wire going to the fuse box, red wire from the plug-in jumps over to the post the main fuse box wire mounts to...and no MSD box...there's also a wire from the R post on the starter solenoid going to the coil, I'm gonna try to take that off tomorrow and see what that does...

  7. if the wire going to the #1 position on the alternator ( to excite it) is connected to the same terminal on the ignition switch that the coil is it will never shut off..then you need to add a diode

What does a diode do? Are there different sizes of diodes? I'll double check my wiring tomorrow and see if maybe I wired my switch wrong...

A diode allows electricity to only flow in one direction,so that it won't "feed" back and interrupt other circuits. Its basically a oneway sign on a highway. When you get one, there will be an arrow stating the direction of flow.

If you have it wired right ,,you wont need any diodes!!!!!

I'm still wondering about the dash light idea, the ignition switch is meant for a tractor and there is a post on it I'm not using...but I'm guessing it's just getting some extra juice to the coil when it shouldn't...

  12. yes , if wired correctly with the correct parts you should not need a diode..but it doesn't sound like his ignition switch is the correct part to use. as i said before , if you are exciting your alternator and providing power to the coil from the same terminal on the ignition switch you will have this run on problem

you need an ignition switch that has an accessory terminal, connect the wire to excite the alternator to that......and an ignition terminal, connect the coil to that....and that is the only wire connected there

or use a diode in the wire to excite the alternator

or don't listen to me at all.....good luck with your progect

36 3window has it right all around. For what its worth, a diode is a 10 cent part.
