Any of you guys that buy/sell cars pretty regularly have any advice for someone looking to sell a vehicle? Anybody have anything good/bad to say about using ebay? It seems like their "final value fees" are kinda high. Anybody sold a car here through the HAMB cl***ifieds? I'm looking to sell my 1954 Bel-Air to buy a 1957 Chrysler, but before I put an ad anywhere, just wanted to ask if anybody had some advice. The car I'm selling is a running/driving vehicle in great shape inside and out, so it's not a project or parts car.....any suggestions??

    Many thanks in advance!

Why not put it in the HAMB Cl***ifieds....
Otherwise I would put it on Craigslists first before you put it on ebay. Its free, lots of people use it and you can at least test the waters for what your asking. I would put it in any listing areas in your state or neighboring states. Ebay is a lot wider audience, but if your using paypal expect them to take a chunk, ebay will take a chunk, etc...

If you ebay it i would not take paypal....rates are high. Instead have the buyer do a wire transfer directly into your bank account.

Probably will sell it closer to home the way gas prices are. Just my thought. Like upzndownz stated put a sign in the window. List it on free places.

Ebay is great advertising exposure, but it's tough to buy a car on-line unless it's pretty cheap. I've had no luck selling cars on Ebay. I would try advertising it on the HAMB, a Chevy Forum and in a local old car paper. We have Old Autos up here which is circulated across the country. You'll likely have the highest chances selling it so someone within 300-400 miles from home. After that the shipping starts to kill you. Spending $2K to ship a show car is one thing, a project is another story.

One word of advice. Advertise the car honestly and faithfully. Two of the guys that came to look at my car thanked me for representing it for what it was. There is nothing that pisses people off faster than driving 4-5 hours to look at what they thought was a decent car only to find a POS rust bucket that barely runs. People value their time...

Deals on wheels, Hemmings are also good places to advertise a mostly stock car. Good luck. Have lots of pictures handy to email people.

I've had luck with going to the local car swap meet and listing in Cl***ic Car Trader.

I sell about four old cars a year. I have the best luck with Ebay. No tire kickers I always get what I expect to get for the cars. Yeah It usually costs me abot $300 with paypal and final value fees but Im garaunteed to have it sold and the money in my account in a week. I have tried craigslist, you get bombarded with phone calls and e-mails and people wanting to come over at 6am to kick the tires. I have put a sign in the window at car shows but have you ever noticed the amount of cars with for sale signs in the window on car shows? Ebay all the way thats my advice. How much you want for the car? I have always kind of wanted a 54

Wow, thanks for all the advice, fellas! I'll post some pics of the car tomorrow. Funny how I didn't realize how few pics I actually have of the car until I needed to produce them. It's a red 2dr Bel-Air sedan/post with white top and spear, has ALL the chrome from front to back including gravel guards, etc., has disc brakes up front, 350/350 combo, and a vintage air unit. My avatar is actually me driving the car. I think that everybody gave sound advice and I'll try to market it close to home (Texas) first. Look for pics tomorrow and be sure to tell a friend, dig!?

    Adios,

I just sold my 32 HR&HP convertible in Japan. Tryed E-Bay twice and also Hotrod Hotline. They didn't really say where they saw it as the only show it was ever at was my booth at Louyville. Simple, a couple of emails and 1 phone call, then they wire transfered the money to my bank and now we're waiting for the transporter. 3rd car I've shipped overseas, seems like they like the dollar exchange right now. The agent I worked with said they they were looking for 40's & early 50's Chevys as the go low crowd was into them.

    One final piece of advice...
you can make up your own bill of sale w/ no problem.
Just make sure you do a search on the web and make sure you include everything YOUR state says in necessary.
VIN #, address of buyer and seller, mileage, description of car, odometer reading, amount of sale, etc etc.
Of course make sure you list it "as is"
and everyone signs everything.. make a copy for each of you

^^^This has always been my experience, If you aren't in a hurry to sell then I would put a sign in the window post it on craigslist and list in the the hamb cl***ifieds but be prepared for the dumb phone calls(I had somebody call me once at 3am) and the endless line of tire kickers, or just pay up and have it sold on ebay but make sure to check to see what others are selling for first and see if they are in the same price range that you are thinking about before you dish out all of that cash for listing fee's.
