i finally got the bumpers on the pontiac done. i'd like to keep em looking nice for as long as possible, so how do i go about doing that?? this is a real question. i've never had a car with new chrome and i'm looking for all the tips and info i can get to keep em good. polishes?? washing??
i think its basically keep them polished. you want to block the moisture in the air from getting to them and oil is basically what does that. Similar to treating bare metal with wd40(oil) during storage, polishes are basically oil that lubricates and protects your fresh chrome. this is what i have gathered after watching my new chrome items rust after the years.
i dont know if anyone else uses it or not but i've used pledge to polish and protect...works good from what i've seen because of the oils in the spray...but i could be wrong
Try the guy out (polisher) below, on the link, in the post below. He's been on here for years and definitely knows what he's talking about. May want to send him a PM or search some of his posts. A lot of the most popular polishes can do more harm than good. Haven't seen him on here for a while, but this place moves so fast nowadays it's hard to tell. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=264724&highlight=polisher
Windex. Clean chrome is happy chrome. Wax is a good sealant.. most polishes actually scrub or polish the finish. If it's new, it doesn't need polish, it needs maintenance. Keep it clean and don't let the elements sit on it and start etching in.
Hey, Paint the backs of the facebars with "Tijuanna Chrome" a.k.a cheap alkyd silver paint! This will slow the moisture from attacking the plating from behind. Also, use thin plastic shims between the bumper bolts and the facebar its self. This keeps the plating from cracking at those areas of attachment. S****ey Devils C.C. If "polisher" were answering he'd probably say don't use anything harsher than plain distilled water and a new soft cloth baby diaper on them. In other words, treat them like new plastic eyegl***es. Any so-called "polish" is liquid sandpaper and will scratch and take chrome off with each application, and wax is corosive to the metal so that's out too.
The plater I used to use said to use the plain Rally wax on the chrome. No abrasives to wear the surface out early. I'll have to remember that plastic spacer suggeston.
