Just got a 2.5 AMC 4 Banger/&5 sp trany from a wrecked 2001 Jeep. Any info on the engine. Does Chrysler make it, is it any good. Want to install it in my 29 Pk Up.
It's based on the old AMC inline 6 from the 60's.The 6 was reworked by Chrysler in 87 for use in Jeeps. It's reliable but sluggish, but more power is available by typical hot rod methods if you can find or build performance parts.Be similar to the GM 2.5 4 cylinder engine power I suppose.
Thanks for the info. I plan to go back to a 2 bl Rochester, will plug the injector holes. What I need here is more power on the hills, we have mountains here. I have a B engine / with a T-5 that I am reworking, full pressure oil and a lot of good stuff already done. Don't know if I will eventually reinstall it or give it up for adoption. At this time in my life I want to drive and not fix so much. Ice man
I think Clifford Performance (the 6=8 guys) makes an intake for it. EDIT: yup.... http://www.cliffordperformance.net/...=CP&Product_Code=47-4501WH&Category_Code=J258
You're thinking of the 232/258/4.2/4.0 six, he's got the 4 banger. I want to say it's the old GM 'iron duke' engine, I could be wrong. It's underpowered in a wrangler, but the 4spd helps. Not much out there at all in the way of aftermarket stuff, I had an oil pump go on me so you might want to upgrade if possible. They aren't a high revving engine, and they are pretty noisy. I have a feeling there's a tractor application in the 2.5s history, it sure feels like it.
To be honest, you'd do better with the straight six; I'm planning to do the same thing with my 31 willys. If you're keeping the 4wd, even easier. I wouldn't use the 4 banger trans though.
I believe the earlier Jeeps used the GM 4 cylinder engine, later ones ,at least by 1986,are the AMC design.I'm real sure ,but not 100 percent The Chrysler/AMC Jeep engine is an excellent inline 6 and probably more potential street power than other inlines of similar size.
2001 was chrysler years, i think it was the 2.5 rear wheeel drive version of the chrylser 2.2/2.5 fwd was devoloped for dodge dakota trucks whicj offered 2.5 for anumber of years. there were jeep versions of pontiac iron duke, and then amc imported a porche audi 4cyl long block in early 80's if it is the dakota 2.5 then there is also speed equip avail
For the 83 model year and later Jeep made a 2.5L four cylinder version of the AMC 232 / 258 / 4.0L six cylinder engine, the AMC six with two cylinders cut off if you wish to think that way. From 78? to 83, Jeep used the GM / Pontiac Iron Duke four cylinder engine (half of a small block Chevy). The Chrysler 2.2 / 2.5 L FWD four was not used in any Chrysler / Jeep application after 1995 (Dakotas switched the AMC / Jeep four cylinder). Both the AMC and the GM 2.5L four cylinder had the GM 60 deg V6 trans bolt pattern. Use the Jeep manual trans bell housing and you can bolt up a 'Ford' pattern T5 trans. If you prefer an automatic, a version of the Chryler 904 TorqueFlite with this trans bolt pattern was used in four cylinder Jeeps, both non-lockup versions and lock-up versions of the 904, in 2WD and 4WD versions. A Ford B engine might had more cubes and maybe more torque, but the Jeep four has way more ponies than any Ford B engine. Keep the weight down and you will have enough scoot with the Jeep four to fill the glove box with speeding tickets. That is all I think I know. Piper106
Thanks for the info guys. This engine came out of a 2w drive Jeep and the trany is the later 5sp. It has no seperate bell housing, so I have to use the engine /trany combo. I have a T-5 in the truck now but have no bell housing to mate to the engine. So now the front wish bones have to be split, the rear need a bracket, and Peet & Jakes is supplying new pedals cause the old pedals go with the A bell housing. Parts here are non existant. I neede a front brake hose for my 93 Ranger. No one had one, one guy said his next parts order will arrive in 2 mo. So I went to Ford, they had one on the shelf, for a total of $153.00 but it was FACTORY correct. LOL Its still on the shelf. Ice man
I have one of these in my restored '86 Comanche. As Piper said, it is more or less AMC's straight-six with 2 cylinders chopped off. '84 and '85 Cherokees used the motor with a carb on top. '86 was the first year of throttle body injection, in which the motor was coated in sensors. '92ish, the motor recieved MPI. For automatics, the TF904 was offered as the 4wd ****** in '86, and the TF909 for 2wd. '87 brough the AW4 auto into play. For manuals, the AX-4 (four speed) was used from '84-mid '88, and was replaced by the AX-5 (five speed). There are rumours that a shortage of AX-4 trannies in the early years caused subs***ution for the T-5 ******, but I am yet to see this in person. I don't know much more about ****** options, as I've mostly been interested in my truck alone, honestly. The motor is pretty bulletproof, as long as you keep oil in it. Have fun!
Run Dont Walk! Do You Know What Jeep Stands For = Just, empty, every, pocket Very Happy To Say Former Jeep Owner. The Only Good Thing Was When The Alternator Went Out I Could Use One Off Of A Chevy. Typical Delco Alt. JEEPS ARE TOYS. NOISY OIL LEAKING MONEY PITS Nuff Said!
