I know I saw this in a thread recently, searched and did not find it (found lots of other good stuff, though). Where in S.E. Michigan is a good place to get steel? Rectangle tube for frame, plate and angle for brackets, etc.

    Thank you.

Metal Supermarket (I think that's the name) in the Troy area is where I've bought steel in the past. It's in an industrial park.

I use the Metal Supermarket in Livonia but their prices are high. I also visit Haggerty Metal in Plymouth for interesting s**** stuff. I always seem to get my self in trouble with their stuff though. Once I bought some big stainless spheres from them and I brought them back to work to show my boss what a score I had found. I held them out so she could see one of them and a bunch of mercury spilled out of it on to the floor. The hazmat team had to come and clean it up. Then I bought a shoebox full of spent amunition casings from them only to find that a few had live primers in them. One of them exploded while I was melting it down to do some casting and the primer went 3" in to my thigh and I almost blead to death. Be carefull what you buy.

I use Pontiac Steel on University in Pontiac. Usually have whatever I need, and prices seem reasonable.

Pontiac Steel hands down. They are the sh*t. Their prices are way better than anywhere else I've found. When you first enter there are huge racks of good sized odds & ends that you purchase by weight and its real cheap. They are on the south side of University dr. just west of Martin Luther King Ave.

We have Alro in Lansing but check the s**** metal dealers. We have Louis Padnos here and they have an area called "Usables" Lots of good stuff goes through there. Steel tables, s****s, odds and ends. Sometime they get stock over runs in back there and it goes by the pound. Forget the current price but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than new at Alro. Some of the stuff back there is new. Aluminum, copper, shafting, stainless and some aluminum sheet. Old highway signs etc.

Thanks to all. Much good info here. I'm running out of excuses for not getting anything done.

Time to go get some metal.

Being that you are in White Lake, Pontiac Steel is pretty close and their selection and prices on the common stuff is really reasonable. I have to find my way back over there soon myself.-Jim

If you're really far in SE Mich, Heck steel in Ida [near Monroe] has or can get most anything and the prices I think are good. Only 2 miles from my house so the savings on fuel cost alone makes it worthwhile. Not open on Saturdays though. Small town but I posted this because all the places already listed are way too far for me to go. Ida is only 20 minutes from Toledo also.

Ann Arbor has ASAP. I think it is on Industrial just north of Grainger. It is a division of L Tek and that is the machine shop side. I've bought s**** from his bin and turned around and had him make flanges for me at work a few years ago.

I didn't even know about Heck. Too bad they aren't open tomorrow. I need some 4" angle iron. I'm only 15 minutes from Ida.
