Did you say tail dragger 40?? Yeah I have posted this before but hey, here it it again. I really gotta get my arse in gear on this one. I keep chopping tops and loosing interest, have about 25 chopped models with nothing else done to them.............. Doc.
Nothing new again...but I'll probably work on some stuff today so a possible update later. I did update my website last week, but nothing major on it and nothing I havn't posted here already. The link is in my signature if you want to check it out. Since we're on taildraggers, here's a couple projects that got started and forgot about. I feel your pain Doc!
Figdter where did you get the la salle grille on that 36 and zed where did you get the caddy sombereos \ man you guys are giving me some dammmm good ideas here for the 40 taildragger -- thoughts: gonna remove the post between window and opera window- shave handles- shave/fill the outside of the deluxe grille- skirt it- and oh damm who knows whatelse at this point anybody wann give me some pointers on building some flush mount and molded skirts _My thoughts: draw a templet of fender well on and index card inserted from back side- cut a piece of thin plastictic a lil bit larger that fender well hole- glue it in and fill it to make it all flush and flowing with fender well guys here is those pics i mentioned
Hello! Whats that 32 Tudor from?? I want one!!! Honestly, go to your local hobby shop and buy some sheet styrene, it will only cost you at most $5 a sheet and its much better to work with, get various different thicknesses too. For flush mount skirts, the trace and cut out idea works best. Make it so that it fits flush perfectly and glue some small tabs onto the inside of the fender for the skirt to sit onto. If you use filler it will take a shit load to fill and be hard to get a nice curve to it. Molded skirts are easy, work out what shape you want and cut them out. You will need to laminate some to get the thickness, once dry sand to the shape desired. When laminating plastic card use liquid poly (From a hobby shop) Avoid superglue for this as it is too brittle. The Liquid Poly will give a super strong bond and still be flexible. If you, or anyone else has any questions don't hesitate to ask, I build models from scratch for museums so I have a fair amount of experience. Cheers, Doc.
the 32 tudor is a remake of the old amt kit this particular one i bought about two maybe three years ago was form amt's switcher line - if you have ever paid attention to my model car post ive got a thing for 32's the kit is pretty good -has alot of olskool period perfect items but for some reason it looks to be unperportioned the back of the body looks way to narrow dunno maybe its me but for some reason it looks really weird, hell maybe its just cause ive built it as a high boy and didnt chop it i dunno hey doc i appreciate the tips on the skirts im gonna try it plus im gonna try some other ideas i got too, plan on building quite alot of taildraggers and late forties early fifties customs in the future i got a diorama going together of a hot rod shop and a ol skool drive-in next door, got allocated spaces for something like 30 models and that doesnt even include fill space or the 2 way street out in front of the two
dammm guys this has been one long ass day i got the new motor between the frame rails of my 1:1 53 chevy this afternoon then around 6 o clock pm i decided to close up shop and go work on the mini hot rods and damm near finished the 32 sedan - need a lil final tweaking here and there - needs to have body glued on, winshield frame and glass put in, grille shell and insert finished and put on and a few other lil things here and there lets see it a AMT body, frame, valve covers and engine block, Revell A sedan wheels and tires, Revell's Rat Rod T Bucket intake, carbs, lake style headers damm what a day
Thanks for the info, I thought that the old AMT 32 Tudor mold was changed. Guess I was wrong, that or I'm thinking of the real old MPC 28(?) Tudor?? Either way, I would love one of those body's, have one of the Orange crate 32's but at $50+ Aussy I cant afford to buy a couple just to use the body. Oh well, I guess once I finish the 1/16 Daytona Coupe and the 1/8 30 coupe I could do my own 32 Tudor, anyone interested in one in 1/8th?
The LaSalle grill can be found in AMT 36 ford kit. JimmyFlinstone makes Tudors in resin for 10dollars US.
As for the La Salle grille on Fiddter's very cool AMT 36 Ford, that one is more like a Nash grille and comes with the AMT 36 Ford kit. (not sure if its included in all kits but I think in the 36 5-window) It looks kind of crude right from the box, but with a bit of work it can look very accurate. And would be even better if you use two inserts combined to fill the complete lengh of the grille from top to bottom. I once created two LaSalle grilles for 1/25 nd 1/24 scale model kits. one 1938 and one 1940 grille. The grille is done in photoetched metal and the suround in resin. Below is the 1/24 scale 1940 LaSalle grille on one of my many unfinished projects. The grille is still available from The Model Car Garage. www.modelcargarage.com Below are the 1/25 scale 1938 and 1940 grilles with the resin grille suround The Sombrero's Zed used can be bought from several aftermarket companies now. The Model Car garage has a very nice set in Aluminum. Replicas and Miniatures has then in unplated resin and the ModelHouse has them in plated resin. The soon to be released Revell 1949 Chopped Mercury kit will also have them included. The 1940 LaSalle grille on my 1/24 scale 36 Ford tailldragger. I created the chopped top and smooth side panels/runningboards and Plymouth bumpers for RMCM. The Sombreros used here are from the Model Car Garage Close up of the Model Car Garage Sombrero with a detail painted photo etch Cadillac crest. And since the Theme here seams to be 1940 Ford taidraggers.. here is another unfinshed project... based on the AMT kit with a Monogram 1940 Ford pick-up truck hood and grille.
Mine are Modelhaus.. and the skirts ( not flush, sorry) from amt 39 sedan Rik , as i've already said, it's a shame to let those babies unfinished ! the 40 has an amazing roof line who gives it lotsa style, and the 36 is more than period perfect...you have to finish them ! ...and make some kool item we need in resin ! 54 Merc tailite, accurate 55 desoto grille to name a few ! you work is so sharp ! and, rik , how do you do those incredible crest !
Hi Zed One day the models will get finished.... one day! Here is another close up of the Hubcaps and some nice details of the modifications I had planned for the 36 Ford. New front door line now a same angle as the rear of the hood side. And the lip on the botom extended to the smooth hood side, slowely fading to nothing towards the front. As for the crest. That one was created from my artwork in relieve cut photo etched metal for the Model Car Garage kit (I also did a nice Barris Crest for them) Then the photo etched crest was carfully detail painted with the apropiate colors using a very fine brush with very litle thinned paint on the tip. It takes some time, but if you are carefull the paint will flow inside the recessed sections. And if you have a bit of overflow you can remove that with a fine toothpic. I did not do it on this sample, but once all the paint is dry you could add a drop of 5-min epoxy or a few coats of clear to act as sealer and it looks like a real plastic crest....
Rik, what tires are you useing on the '36? They fit the wheels and look of the car. I've got a need for several sets and those would be perfect for my mental pictures. Do you know any more about the '49 merc from Revell? Lots of folks eagerly awaiting that release!
I will get back to you on the white wall tires. They are resin from the Modelhouse.. will see if I can find the part number. The 49 Merc is close to be out on the market. Here is a link to a folder showing some test shot built ups... http://public.fotki.com/dmacb/scale_auto_shows/milwaukee-nnl-2007/page6.html I was excited about this new kit when I heard about it... seeing the photos of it makes me far less excited :-(
i dunno it looks good to me thats another thing in the works here at the Outlaws Rod & Kustom Miniture shop i got two AMT merc kits off of ebay for 2.50 each and am planning on building up two of the Flinstones resin merc bodies "the rock hopper" and the one with the carson top kinda wanna put wide whites & flippers on one and wide whites & caddy sombreros on the other we will see i guess hey guys thanks for the info im gonna have to check into these
Found this old thread... Here is my attempt to build a miniature taildragger. It is a Lindberg 40 Ford with vacuum formed HT roof... and pick up grille.
Juhap looks good, throw in some thin chrome B pillars 'ala' the Hirohata Merc and that will be sweet. A nice dressed Nailhead, in the weeds out back with a touch of Westerguard.....
these are really great guys.I could look at models all day long, but Sunday is just not enough. Any one know of any good model car sights, Just for cars?? Thanks and thanks for posting. Chuck

There is one VERY good site for larger scale models, most guys are members here too, http://www.scalemotorcars.com/cmps_index.php Then there is the Scale Auto site. I have been kicked off there twice, you can look but just dont dis-agree with the admin! http://cs.scaleautomag.com/scacs/forums/
Hi Doc, I quit the Scalemotorcars site because of their controlling attitude towards contributors......Mike
I don't know how to link but try "traditional rod and kustom in scale". It's a cool site with some HAMBERS on it.
The spotlight hobbies board is great if you're into hot rods....and muscle cars and ricers and tractors and semi trucks and boats and especially nascar. Oh, and if you like buying pearl necklaces from the owners "convenient marriage" wife. The TRAK board is ok...some decent stuff to look at. The rules are all over the place, weird and always changing there though so I kinda just lurk now.
Yep, my Gold 32 was voted Model of the Month, and will be on the homepage for June! Pretty cool. http://trakinscale.proboards105.com/index.cgi?
Hello, did this 36 get finished? Seen this years ago; I just lost the thread, and might have missed the results. Would love to see the outcome.
