This is the 1967 F-17 Winnebago that the midget, "Tatoo" from the "Fantasy Island" television show had chopped. He toured the country for several months after the show's cancellation. He was very hospitible. If you were his height or smaller, which was rare, he would invite you to, "spend a night with a star" for free. He called his rig the, "Stay-free-mini-pad.";)

I agree with most of the threads here, I personally really dislike ANY pickup chopped at all unless you are re-aligning the roof an inch on one end, etc.

Just changes the 'purpose' the design originally had, if that makes any sense...

Stupid thread, chop your car if you want, unless you build for other peoples enjoyment.
If you need to ask permission then you probably should leave it alone

personally i think the chop thing is over done and over rated..it soon to become the new red wheels..
Im not chopping nothin' i like the look of lowered (not slammed) normal roof lines on the old classics.
I have no intentions of chopping my A.
lower it? definetly..chop it? i dont think so.
my 53 is out of the question..staying the way it is.as far as the roof goes.
hey it works for some..its just not my thing

  7. my sentiments exactly! I love restored original cars and trucks, it makes chopping so much nicer (it hard welding rust buckets) get the best you can afford and build it to match your vision or dreams. let the whiners fight over all the mint parts you throw away.....Jim

I only have 2 vehicles left unchopped and I'm looking at both of them with my eyes squinted!!

  8. I'd whack it about 2 inches and add a smaller rear window, big and littles...........er nice car!

  9. 55-on should Not in most cases.

Unless its a damn high-concept show vehicle.

Modification solely for the sake of modification is not hot rodding. That's gold-chaining and show-rodding. Hot rodding is about making something better. A chop, like any other modification, is not a one size fits all solution. Disclaimer- Unless you're trying to beat drag on the salt, then it's totally justified regardless of ugly.

One of the funniest things I've read today.

It's already been said, but I think the question should be more along the lines of which person shouldn't be chopping. A very talented builder with a good eye can probably get away somethings that the average slob never could. That being said. They're are those cars that are so closed to being proportionally perfect that the time spent chopping the car would be better spent on much smaller and less drastic changes. Such perfect cars include old Bugattis, Alfas, Talbot Lagots, Delahayes, Maseratis, Mercedes-Benz, Ferraris, Dusenbergs and Auburn, Aston Martins and pretty much any other sports racers through the mid 60s. Not that anyone would likely mess with any of these cars. More so in our world I am inclined to agree with that any car that comes after 54 Chevy body style. As these cars became longer, lower and wider. Detroit was copying the customisers. So there is less of a need to chop them. Detroit already did it. Especially radical chops. And Especially on early 60s bubbletops and just about another car through he 60s. Even for a talented builder restraint should be used. But like someone else said have fun with your car. It's all metal anyway. It can be fixed. Plus I enjoy watching tards.

I guess this thread proves there are many different types of people in this hobby....custom guys chop stuff up to try to improve the looks....we don't really care what it is...we just give it a shot.
Then you have guys that like kinda stock looking old cars that can be driven like a newer car....or for their own reasons just think a car looks right the way it was designed.
And of course there are the hotrodders....if the chop it it's to go faster (and maybe get the right look)
Anyway....it's all just personal opinions...so this thread is really pointless. There are no damn rules! (and if there are ...they were made to be broken)

Now that is well said! It may echo some others with the same conclusion, but this nails it for me.

I recently saw a 70 mustang with a 3/4 inch chop. that's right, three quarters of an inch.

it was bitchin. They basically closed up the gaps around the factory glass. You simply wouldn't beleive how dramatic that little of a chop made the car look.

    point being?
    sometimes, less is more.
