This is a 1940 chevy thats been sitting for 20 years and now its mine . I got a new 6 volt battery and it wouldnt turn over so i got the 12 volt out of my caddy and ran the coil wire to the pos. Put a shot of gas in the carb and it started right up . Why wont it turn with the 6 volt ? Then i hooked up the 6 volt while it was running stayed running with no battery. Does that mean its charging if it runs with no battery like an alt .This is the first car ive owned with 6 volt generator? Alsow the ****** how in the hell do you drive this thing took it for a ride down the street is there a trick to shifting the three on the tree .Had it in first ,where is 2 and 3 gear at ? If i rewire this car to 12 volt will the starter last or burn out ? motors what do you guys have for motors in your chevys love to see some pics of 40 41 chevy rods and theres not much room under the hood , here are some pics anyone that has somthing good to say thanks , 100_0954.jpg

My pops put a 12 volt system in his 49 chevy and the starter loves it. He was told it would be alright. You can put any engine in ther too. You just have to chop, cut and rebuild as they say. I have a similar car. A 39 olds 2 dr sedan black all stock too. As soon as I wrap up my 68 442, a 371 j2 olds is going in the 39.

Nice looking car. What are your plans? You going v-8 or staying with a 6 banger?

The 6 volt systems need good connections. The 6v battery it good? I really don't think you would have any problem with the starter running 12v with it.

doesn't that have the wacky vacuum ***ist 3 speed? I don't know anything about them, other than the vacuum parts sell well on ebay.

1st is down and toward the driver, REVERSE is straight up, second is up and forward, and 3rd is straight down from there.

First of all, read you posts before you load them. Do you talk like you write, cuz you're hard to understand. If you go to 12 volts, you will need to cut the voltage to your gas gauge back to 6 volts or you'll (probably?) ruin it. Do the same for the radio. There are vendors on the AMB and other places for the little gizzmos. Do a search here for switching from 6 to 12 volts. Change the bulbs to 12 volts, they will not live long at 12 volts. The starter will be fine with 12 volts. The car most likely has vacuum ***isted shifting, and when it works, it is sweet. You can shift with one finger. When it ****s out, you need, Hulk arms to shift. I know, I had one. It has the normal 3-on-the-tree shifting pattern. If you rewire the car, go with a pre-made harness, the manufacturer can probably add wires for whatever additions you might want.Yes, if it runs with battery disconnected, the generator is working. As for engine choices, do a search. A 235 is practically a no-brainer, Patricks sells a kit to put better gears in the rear end. Looks like a really great car. Good luck with it.

OK,I'll try.Step on the clutch, and with the palm of your hand facing you, pull the lever towards you and down, thats first. Then when you shift into second, face your palm away from you and push the lever up to the middle, keep pushing away and go up,thats second. For third, face palm away from you and pull down, thats third. To get into reverse, face your palm and pull the lever to you and up.Looks like an "H" but sideways.Car looks cool, good luck! I once had a fairlane that wouldnt shift to second or high, syncros were bad.

Looks like a real nice car . I hope you get the 6V sorted. If that were my car id make the inside nice and drive it as is , maybe new rubber i wouldnt trust tires that sit around to long.

Oh one more thing , With that 3 speed if you cant down shift back in to first without it grinding don't think something is wrong. first probably isnt synked and will not go in to first until you stop or real close to stopping.

Yes thats the plan but the wiring falls apart in you hands when you just touch it , crumbles . I mit just change one wire at a time and it does grind when you try to down shift thanks The hank

didn't the person selling the car take you for a "test drive" to show you how it shifted. sounds like you need to have that 6v battery tested. optima makes a 6v battery that should crank that old chevy over real fine.

I think its the vac*** line , Its hard to move the shifter . I tyed pushing it and pulling it up down It wouldnt do anything . Its not this hard i would think ! IM going to try to clean the grounds and put in some new cables in .The battery should be good i just picked up and it wasnt cheap 50 bucks with the core

If the wires are falling apart when yo touch them, rewire the car before you do anything. You'll burn the damn thing to the ground. 6v Starter works like a champ on 12v. Gauges will not. Lights will be brighter and all will be well. I can't help you with the shifter. If you can drive a stick, you know how to drive a column shift. Try cleaning it up and lubing everything. If that doesn't work, buy a manual.
