Whiny transmission

    53 chevy with 235 and standard transmission.... 3 speed. Trans whines when driving. Is this the nature of the beast? Did they whine like that right out of the show room back in the day or what?

    How's the fluid? Changing your fluid and making sure you have the right stuff in there might be all she needs. Could also be a throw out or pilot bearing on it's way out.

    3rd should be quiet, 1st and 2nd will make some noise. If 3rd is noisey most likely wrong lube or bearings going. As above also make sure T/O bearing is not turning with the clutch engaged.

    3rd is quiet. 1st and 2nd noisy. I guess all is well. Just changed fluid. Used 90w gear oil. Throw out bearing does clank around when clutch is engaged. Guess I'll let it clank until I can't stand it any more! Thanks for the info

    Be careful with that. When they do decide to lock up or come apart they like to take other things with them.
