One other thing - and I mean no disrespect, I'm saying this trying to be helpful - if you're anywhere as hyper as you come across on this post ("shouting" with all caps, being PISSED OFF, etc), you'll get nowhere REAL fast with the DMV or any other 'public servants'. They can screw with you a lot more than you can screw with them, so be polite, be respectful, keep your voice down and try to be as helpful to them to get their job done under the rules given them, as you can.

    Just my 2¢

I have used a registration service here in Southern Cal, in March of this year. I registered a hand built frame using a pink slip from New York that was issued in 1936. I stamped the number from the pink (it was an engine number I think) into a metal tag that I welded to the frame, the lady came to my shop and verified the number, I paid her and within 4 days had the plates, registration and tags in hand, and within 10 days had a new pink from the state. It cost me $265 to have her drive from Northridge to Oxnard, and about $75 in DMV fees, but it was worth the price to not have to deal with the DMV or Highway Patrol. I also am an AAA member and normally they are really cool to work with, but they would have nothing to do with the out of state pink. If you need the registration services, call: ***** (!) Pearson at California Alternative Registration Service, (C.A.R.S)818.426.9360. She says the only thing she has problems with are 32 Fords.

Feel your pain. Last time I had to deal with my DMV, I got the runaround so bad that the Colorado State Patrol captian called them and let them know unequivocally that it was time to stop. After that it took about 15 minutes. Best of luck, don't give up.

  4. No such thing as a VIN until 1968. Car had a serial number on the left A-post and an engine serial number on the block. They don't necessarily match. It varies from state to state and even car to car what was used as an ID number for registration purposes.

The partial serial from his other post seems to be from the A-post tag, missing the first three characters. I wouldn't try to use an engine number on the off chance it was changed 30 years ago and someone since re-used the paperwork from the engine donor and that number is in use somewhere.

Seems like a love/hate thing out there.
Cool **** all over the place, shops all over, spots to cruise, constant shows etc.
But then you have the DMV and smog **** to get through.
Pretty easy here for older cars.
    No inspection and no emissions.
Just walked into DMV with paperwork, $150 (tax, tags,***le) and walked out with tags for 2 years.
Paid an extra $25, for 2 years, to run original 62 plates.
No one even sighted my car during the whole process, it was at home.
Maryland may be screwed up about a lot of things, including taxes, but at lest they're cool about older cars.
Even came up with a lifetime registration for cars over 60 years old last year.
That's right one time fee and your tags are good till you transfer the car.

Rent Planet of the Apes. I know you already saw it. So did I when I was a kid, I did'nt even like it because of the fake monkies. I mean the original with Charleton Heston. Don't shine this on, man. Watch Planet of the Apes, the original.

You will believe you are Charleton Heston. You will recognize California DMV to be the frontline evidence of the State gone mad.

No license, no registration, no car insurance? Cops just let them go. Can't locate 'em, don't know their real names, cides, it's the Feds job. Even if an illegal crashes into you with no insurance, they just let them go. You don't have to be legal to buy a car. The California DMV forces every State failing right in your face.

I went through it like you. My car had no engine. I could not have it towed to DMV at their beck and call. I supplied stamped frame number, signed and dated bill of sale, the old license plate, signed and dated ***le, WTF if I stole a car would I provide this kind of paper trail?

Do not shine this on. Watch Planet of the Apes. Then you will get what is really going on.

I sent you a PM and that will get you all fixed up ! I live in PA and they are even worst than you guys !We have to go through all kinds of inspections and then we have to send all this RED Tape paper work in and wait for up to 6 months or whenever they want to right you back and turn you down !!! Then you go do a boat load more **** and try to get a state Rep to do the paper and footwork for you and then....you might get a ***le !!! So you think you have it bad !!
Just see the place I told you about and you will be riding that BEAUTIFUL car soon !! Good luck and send me a pic when it's done !

I'm glad I live where I do. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but in most small towns you get a lot done with a pleasant smile. I usually walk in and tell one of the ladies that I'm having a hard time and need someone to help me. It gives them a chance to be a hero and feel good about themselves and I get my car registered.
I've registered a Triumph motorcycle with a bill of sale written on a napkin, a '24 T with an un-notarized ***le that had been sold three times in two different states without bringing the registration up to date and my favorite a 39 Ford coupe that we couldn't find a vin for so we used the part number of the top radiator hose.
Small town DMV's are able to things that can't be done because they know the people they are dealing with.

Very good advice. People at the DMV are public servants, and they want you (a common "civilian") to respect their author-eh-tie! Be polite and courteous, even play dumb if you have to, but be sure of what you want them to do for you. Most of them are not extremely familiar with old car paperwork, and sometimes they just need a little nudging in the right direction. Also, try to frequent the same location. Get to know the folks there. Flirt with the old hags behind the counter, buy them donuts... Whatever it takes! If you are a familiar face they will be a lot more inclined to help you out. You'll always catch a lot more flies with honey than vinegar...

Go with the private company to avoid all the h***le. I bought a '34 roadster that had a 1948 registration from Canada. When I took it to the DMV they wanted me to contact the original owner and all subsequent owners and then post a $25,000 bond. Fortunately the guy I bought it from had connections with one of those companies. I gave him the paperwork and two days later it was registered. I don't know how they did it and I didn't really care. The California DMV is one of the main reasons I live in Nevada. Good luck.

  21. If you are smart you will keep any stamping numbers talk on the down low. That's what PM's are for.

Take a piece of onion skin paper and do a pencil rubbing over the serial number in the door jam. The one you said was backwards from the door hitting it, right? Now, go to the bathroom mirror and you'll be able to read the number. Then start the ***le search bull **** or have plate made or stamp it. Which ever is going to look at factory as possible.

hell anywhere away from that place, you could not pay me to live in a state full of Nazis (did i really use that word?). its not hard at all registering and old car here in TN, hell its a no brainer and you can run vintage tags at that. if i was you id find a friend in some other state and register it to his property and be done with it. before i put antique tags on my car i had it registered in the next county for the cheap tags and no inspection. there is ways to work around anything and its not like its a stolen car, so find a ***le and the little plate and go from there.

Not to start any my state is better than yours kind of thing, but I grew up in MD, and been back many times and MD has its downside as well. If you speed in MD, they will be all over your *** fast and they generally don't cut you any slack when they pull you over. The MD State police have speed traps all over the place all the time and make the CHP here seem like slackers. They will pull you over for 3 mph over the limit, but you speed more than 10 mph over the limit on any road and get caught in MD, you better pull the lube out of the glove box before they get up to your car. My first ticket when I was 17 was when I was driving my old '74 TA I had just got, basically stock but with 80's Cragar rims (that I didn't like anyway) with fat tires on the back. My brother was in the back because I needed to pick a guy up for work just down the road. I had the car for about a month and was waiting for set of stock wheels to come in. I was following about 5-6 others cars down the road going to work about 8 in the morning, last in line for about 5 miles, no big hurry probably below the speed limit, when a cop comes past the other way and then I see in the mirror quickly pulls a U-turn and is on my *** faster than a Cheetah and flashes the lights and starts yelling some pull over **** in the bullhorn. His fat *** gets out of the car and comes up to window which I had rolled down. The old "do you know how fast you were going?" comes out and I respond that I don't really know because I was just following all the other people in front of me for several miles and I wasn't paying much attention but I guess about the speed limit. "Don't get smart with me boy!" is his response, "you were doing ** in YY!" I say, "How come the people in front of me weren't speeding then?" He says they weren't speeding, I was the one speeding and on top of that my rear tires are too big and not enough tread, my shocks are bad, my headlights are out of adjustment (remember 8am summer time here, very bright out) and to top it off my wipers are bad. He somehow figures all this out within 3 min. without even inspecting anything. I told him I just got the car and am already planning to replace the wheels because I don't like them, my brother confirms for me. He says he doesn't care about that and then he asks why my brother was riding in the back? I said because I asked him to because we needed to pick somebody else up just up the road. He gave me the speeding ticket and another for all the repairs. I went home after work and my ***hole stepfather took the side of the cop and said I probably got smart with him and deserved it. I still remember that fondly.

That wasn't my only bad experience with MD State police either. And to be honest, I am a pretty low key not trouble making kind of guy.

In CA for almost 20 years, got (1) ticket for speeding years ago and I was speeding well over the posted speed because I was late and I pretty much can't argue about that one. If you aren't killing people or being a total *** on the road, at least in CA they don't tend to bother you. Unfortunately, that is probably because there are plenty of people killing each other and being total ***es and they have their hands full enough with them. :)

MD is a nice enough place to live, but not if you have a heavy foot or drive a jacked up TA. I am going back next month to visit the folks, now watch, I'll probably get a speeding ticket because of bad mouthing karma. I'll take a state with a lame DMV over one with overly aggressive state police any day. That truly is one reason I never thought much about staying in MD once out of school.

Now speed in TX and get pulled over, man not sure I want to tempt that, might go straight to death row for all I know or get legally shot by somebody if you accidentally cut them off or something.

Here's a question for you Califonia guys....

I own a 1954 Triumph that is an original California car...I have a California "vehicle/vessel transfer and re***ignment form" with the last registered owners name and signature on it. But it's re***igned to the guy I bought it from.

I do not have a pink slip.

Is there any way I can get a CA registration for this car so I can re-register it in my home state?
