Before I start just wrenching on this, has anyone ever had an oil filter that would not come off? This is a 71 BBC. I have already started to crush the housing. All the oil is out of the engine. Just a little advise from someone who has been thru this.

    Thanks,

    Gary

  3. Sure I have had them soo stuck they crushed and then I drive a screw driver through it and finally got it off. Some time you got to get a little rough.

Yes, most have at one time or another. Probably no lube on the oring...... If you haven't tried, get a strap type filter wrench they'll usually get the job done. I have one that's a chain with a long green handle that will remove ANYTHING. If all else fails you may have to use a long chizzel at the base ring and 'punch' it off. Take care with that though and don't damage the block.

try using the oil filter wrench as close to the top of the filter as you can, sometimes that works. otherwise your looking at using the screwdriver.

I will go out and try at the very top and see if that works. I would not be able to use the screw driver as a T handle as there is no room. Thanks and keep more ideas coming in case I faail at this attempt.

Some parts stores sell the cap stlye wrenches that fit over the end of the filter or else there is the claw style which fits on a 3/8 ratchet and has 3 jaws that clamp down as you turn, never had one that could beat THE CLAW!! Good Luck

Wrap a hose clamp around the filter as close to the base as you can. you may have to double up some clamps to get the right size, position the screw on the clamp so that when you have tightened the hose clamp the head of the screw is in the position to hit the head counter clock wise, the head of the screw is what you want to tap or "hit" with a hammer to loosen it up.

Or try a long "sharp" chisel or flat screw driver to tap the base of the filter near the block.

Go slow on both of these they do work !!

The mr gasket adapter on my 348 is a total PITA to get an AC filter on and off (actually had one rip in two with a strap wrench once) and that same strap wrench works the best IMO. But I put a Fram filter on it today and it spun right on with no problems. Dunno why.

Do a search for Fram filters. You may wanna replace it with something else, like a Wix.

You guys wanna talk about stuck filters???
When I was a kid, me and a friend tried to blow up a 283 in a 66 chevelle 4 door.
We proped a brick on the gas pedal with the car in park, and stood waaay back. It ran at what sounded like 90,000 rpm's for about 10 minutes and then it stalled and died. We poped the hood and the exhaust manifolds were almost white they were so hot.
Tried it again, same results. Just overheat and die. Did it a total of about 5 times before we finally just gave up.

A couple months later, a friend of ours needed a cheap SBC to replace the one with a knocking rod in his nova.... Yea, we got one :D

Droped it in. It ran just fine. Then he tried to change the oil

The gasket had melted and bonded to the block.

Took 2 days to get it off, in pieces no less. :D
