Why are the French flatheads banned at Bonneville? (as mentioned above) I really should get out that way and visit sometime. I think his knowledge is more inspiring than his impressive collection!
Because they aren't exactly the same as the early ford ones and they weren't ever used in production cars for sale to the public. You can run them in other classes for oddball power sources (but that would be a waste) , but you can't run them in a flathead class.

I always try to get people's names correct. Does Vern pronounce his name "TAR-DELL", or "TARDLE"? I've heard it mentioned both ways. Awesome read.
