1- if you are here, you have access to the internet.
2- every state has a section of their website (usually under the tax and revenue section) that lays out exactly what the rules are for any given era of car.
3- there are hundreds of companies across the country selling clean titles and matching body tags / vin plates from crushed cars of almost any make and year. For that matter, on a heavily customized car, how many state employees could tell what make or exact year it was originally? You could use a '48 Ford title and VIN and no one would be the wiser (unless the cop was a serious car guy, in which case he wouldn't be likely to screw with you anyway).

Everyone whines about the messed up laws - do something about it. Go to www.enjoythedrive.com and see what new (vehicle related) laws your state is considering, and get contact info for all of the reps involved. SEMA has managed to get hot-rod friendly legislation passed in many states already, through guys like us joining the appropriate letter writing campaigns at the right times.

The top of their 'latest news' right now is:

"Pro-Hobbyist Massachusetts Street Rod and Custom Vehicle Bill to be Considered by Joint Transportation Committee on Oct. 11th

SEMA model legislation (H.B. 3458/H.B. 3567) that would create a vehicle registration classification for street rods and custom vehicles and provide for special license plates for these vehicles will be considered by the Massachusetts Joint Transportation Committee on Thursday, October 11th."

Clicking on the link gets you a complete explanation of the bill, and a list of every member of the transportation sub-commitee, complete with phone, fax, and e-mail addresses.

Just one example. Do your part to support well-written laws and oppose the crap (like the link after that one to a law that will ban aftermarket exhaust). Even if you like whining, think of it as being more effective to whine BEFORE it becomes law.

You got that right! I bought my 1950 Dodge off a guy here who had owned it for 6yrs. It had a W.Virginia title and the date on that was 1994. I get on the website, it says to have your insurance, the title and since it's outta state, they just want an inspection station to verify the VIN. So, I go to the local Valvoline Oil Change joint, walk inside, hand Max my title and tell him I need "that piece of paper for the state saying this VIN is the one on my car" (my car mind you is on a trailer at my house). Max hands me the paper, just puts a check next to the VIN part and off I go to DMV.
I get there, hand the lady my insurance, my outta state title and the VIN cert from the inspection station.
She looks up and says, "The title isnt signed" I say, "Oh, sorry, here I'll fix it", I take the title, sign the guys name in front of her and hand it back. She says, "That'll be $154" to which I hand her with a quickness and BOOM, I'm DONE...I was in DMV for 20 minutes.
Two weeks later, there is my beautiful Texas title in the mail.

    Seriously, Move To Texas.

DMV probably will take one look at it and send you to get an appointment with CHP verifier. He was willing to go up on the trailer to look at VINs on frame, motor, doors, etc. My car was still on a trailer and the DMV lady told me they no longer crawl up onto trailers because one of them slipped once and now it's policy. I opened the door and she verified it from the ground.

OH I WILL!! Now i can find myself some nice YOM plates!!

  8. Check with DMV (preferably the main Sacramento office special plates and registration division) that the plates are clear (before you buy them) so we don't have to suffer through more CAPS LOCK and "move to Texas, we register cars here like we stole em" poetry. :p

    Thanks,
    Kurt

  9. And, you and Groucho should've gone down to DMV in Burbank a cussin' and a swearin', and taped it for youtube. :D

YOM plates suck if they are specialized. I have to get the PO to sign a statement of facts to release interest on the plates.

It took you a year to get them? What the?

It always amazes me when there are posts like this that say the DMV and "Fill in the State" suck because the poster (and the 42 clowns who chime in with the same your state sucks) has a car with no paperwork and no VIN number or other identification and the DMV wants them to play by the rules. there's a damn good reason why cars have VIN numbers, titles and other identification, if you don't believe it see what happens when your no VIN no Title car gets stolen - You can't prove it's your! It really isn't that hard to get a car titled and registered here if you use a little common sense and do things correctly.

I have a hard time understanding how someone starts pouring money and time into a car/truck they don't have a title for. If you buy a car without a title get one BEFORE you work on it not after. Also when you buy one with a title get it transfered into your name BEFORE working on it not after.

Dmv told me my YOM plates are specialized/personalized so I need release of interest from the lady who sold it to me. It is pretty stupid. They said they will just junk the plates if I can't get a written statement.

That's wrong. I have done a few sets of YOM and just take them in to DMV, they check to see that they are clear, look at the condition, take a couple of pictures (on the copy machine!) send the paperwork to Sac'to and a few weeks later, stickers and registration. Easy.

Not what dmv is saying. The local office and two 1-800# goons. The car is already registered with the YOM plates but they want the prev owner to sign them off.

Same with the plates I took in.
Took about 20 minutes total(new girl) and I bought mine from an out of state guy on ebay.
Make sure you have the "year" sticker with you to put on the plate.

I alway's thought in California you didn't have to do smog tests on cars before 67 or 68? I Could be wrong though.

If they are already registered to the car and the P/O signed the title, you should not be having a problem.

Have you tried going to AAA or another DMV?

OK, that wasn't real clear in your first post. Sorry. If you bought the car with them on it, that could be true, but my buddy bought an A with YOM plates and he just went to a Registration Service and they got it transfered and registered without any issues or a signed release.
In your case can you not get a release from her?

I am in the process of getting one from her but it will have to be mailed. They already signed the title and dmv charged me for the plates but said I can't use them until I get her signature. They won't accept a fax or scanned document so it just takes longer. It is pretty damn stupid if you ask me. They said there are normal YOM plates and specialized. Somehow mine fall into specialized. If they were normal I wouldn't need this signature.

They wouldn't explain it. The PO had a problem with one dmv registering them and went to another and were registered in 10 minutes. My luck is bad bc everyone is telling me the same thing.

So what plates do you have?
56-62 plates are Yellow with Black letters/numbers for cars.

The lady who verified my car came to my house on wednesday last week and i received the plates today. My situation was pretty bad , im not gonna get into details but it was a f@$ked situation. So im pretty stoked it's all squared away!!

As far as building a car and investing money without having it registered first, i know it's not the smartest but i didnt think it would be a smart thing to have somebody come to look at my car in the state that it was in. I 100% believe that things wouldnt have gone as smooth with the car looking like this! No motor and tranny and no VIN

I myself admit that I got my latest car in my name before any work was done, but if you BUY the car, you already have money and time invested in it.
Only reason I went ahead and registered this one was cuz this time I actually had a title for it, and an outta-state one to boot.

If I buy it, build it, or 'possess' it, it's mine and I'll drive it.
(I'm really not trying to be one of those "Damn Texans"..lol)
"Procuring" a VIN number isn't impossible and it's usually the last thing I take care of due to my hatred of paperwork, and the people at the DMV couldn't agree with me more. They seem to realize it's painful for both parties.

Of course, I do live in Texas.
I truly pity those of you that have hassles.

Ian, I'm glad to see you finally got it 'government approved'!
NOW DRIVE THE HELL OUT OF IT!!
