What transmissions will fit the 292 Y block? I have an early style 4 speed truck ******, will that work? Id like to find a ****** that will bolt up or take little modification/adapter to work. Help me out fellas!
Toploader four speeds are a good choice. Minumum mods required if a car bellhousing is used, no adapter. If you want info on the mods, PM me. If a three speed column shift will do, any three speed from 49-??? should fit. T-5 with adapter If you want an auto, C4, AOD - adapters required.
i built a 26 roadster p up for a guy here in cincinnati and he used a truck y bolck bell housing and put a 83-88 ford 4 speed truck trans behind it. the trans 4th gear was an over drive . he had to redrill one hole and had the throw out bearing sleeve , sleeved to fit into the bigger hole in the bell housing .
In my '31 roadster with a 292, I've got a T-10 out of a '63 falcon. The bell housing is a '63 pickup that had a three speed. Flywheel and pressure plate are out of the '63 pickup , and I think the clutch disc is for the pickup to, as long as the splines fit the shaft and the o.d. is the same as the pressure plate. Good Luck.
I'm using a T-10 out of a '64 Falcon behind my '57 272. The motor and bellhousing are out of a '57 pick-up. I had to turn the OD of the bearing retainer down slightly to fit in the Y-block truck bellhousing. I had to lengthen the T-10 input shaft 5/8" to get proper engagement in the pilot bushing as there was no room on the stock truck combo to put a custom pilot bushing in. I used the original truck throw-out/release bearing (truck trans has a a 1-3/8"-10 spline input shaft) and did that by machining a sleeve for the T-10 bearing retainer as its input shaft is 1-1/16"-10 spline and the retainer is sized accordingly. The flywheel, pressure plate and throw-out bearing are stock '57 Y-block truck pieces (11") and the clutch is a stock 11" 1-1/16"-10 spline sprung hub disc available for a '65 or '66 289HP powered Falcon. -Bigchief
An FMX auto fits by redrilling two holes in the bellhousing, use a y block flexplate and convertor. Thats if you want an auto.
My 312" 55 Ford has a car T-10 4 speed in it.. No mods were needed. Car bell housing and flywheel, car pre 1966 4 speed...all bolts together...
Some car toploaders from the 70's had an iron case, normal shifter (bolted to the side of the case) OD top loader. Pick-ups in the 80's also ran versions of OD toploaders and toploader-like trannies. The one you'd probably like to use in your early 60's truck is an T170FT built by Tremec for Ford. Its found in '84 and '85 F150's and full size Broncos. They were available in 2WD and 4WD trucks. Jeep also has a version but it is not an OD trans. The trans tag will say RTS on it. Its an aluminum case top-shifted toploader type trans that looks very, very much like a traditional Ford toploader. The OD ratio is about .79:1 and works nice for what it is. The 4x4 and crawler guys don't like them because they will flex the case and break when pushed to the limit, however, when used in normal road going trucks they are generally trouble free. Do a search on overdrive toploaders out on the net. Lots of information on them. Didn't we go over this with you not too long ago???? -Bigchief.
Toploaders with overdrive were used in '77 and '78 Granadas, light trucks and vans. OD toploaders look almost identical to the earlier p***enger car toploaders. Google toploader for tons of good info.
Yeah, we did, and I did get some valuable information, but I figured I'd just bring it up again in this thread seeing its the same topic and all and see if I could get a few more tips from other people. Thanks Bigchief.
I just received my toploader Jeep conversion from "David Kee toploaders" in San Antonio Tx. Google his name and everything you need is on his sight.Part numbers, all the years and makes, measurements etc.... Time Bomb John.
