Feeling very tempted by the beneficial exchange rate right now to pick up a nice rod in the states and ship it over here. Don't really feel like waiting the 2 months for it to arrive tho, so I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea what about the cost/logistics of using air freight for a car? Are we talking figures similar to the price of the car itself here??
Slopchop, you're kidding right? Or do you have friends in the Navy to rent a freight plane? Just a wild guess, the price would be 20 Grand...
Yikes, I was thinking high, but not that high. I just wouldn't want to wait for a boat if I bought a rod over in the US. I would want it now!
I shipped a Nash from the US to Malaysia via air. After calling tens of companies I finally found one that would do it. It cost $9,000 USD. The company was called EMO Trans. Here is their website: http://www.emotrans.com/ Here is a post about my saga last summer with shipping by air: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=190273&showall=1
$9K is a pretty good price...how long ago was that? My experience is that although ocean takes longer, the stuff always gets there. We had a 4' dish antenna for a project in the USVI being shipped via air freight (for about $1200) from TX to St. Thomas via Miami....damn thing got "misplaced" and turned up in Bombay 4 weeks later. Probably still sitting there, too.
That was last July when I shipped the Nash. The hold up in customs I mentioned in the post was first in Detroit then in Chicago. It obviously had no problems on the Malaysia side being a govt project and all. I imagine with the price of fuel lately it has gone up significantly like everything else Shipping by boat has gone up the first of every month for the past 3 months or so. They are running out of containers at the port. Now not only do you have to wait for a spot on a ship but also a container Also another thing to consider is the state of your local port. Some ports like Oslo/Dramen in Norway are SOOO overcrowded cars aren't cleared very quickly unless you have all of your ducks in a line when the car arrives. If you have a specific question feel free to PM me.
