Let's all hope and pray that he makes it, Then someone could tell him the errors of his ways....But it still could have been out of his control...gas pedal stuck or something...we don't know...

    Excellent points....my thoughts exactly.

  4. Yeah, when you can buy a 9 second bike, from the dealer stock, that power to weight thing doesn't hold water.

A lot more idiots out riding sport bikes, than in hot rods.
At least that's the case in our area.

  5. I had a friend almost wreck his 72 Chevy pickup because the throttle linkage popped off.
Could have easily been the case here too.
Pray he'll recover, join and we can get the real story.
He could already be a member for all we know???
Could also be the minivans fault too.
I've dodged quite a few of them lately myself.
Hard to argue with the people in the minivan, when you're in a trauma center, in critical condition.
We all know how "accurate" the liberal media can be.

You know man, I don't really think we have to worry about the government trying to protect us from ourselves. Let's face it, they don't really give a shit about us. And all in all I think we're pretty low on their list of priorities considering the fact that these incidents are a tiny, tiny fraction of auto accidents. Plus, the truth of the matter is that it's usually us who get hurt when one of our antiques goes up against a newer car with crumple zones and airbags (notice that everyone in the minivan was OK), so we're mostly just hurting ourselves. Around here in Florida (and a lot of other places I suspect) the big buzz is all about reeling in the 2-wheeled suicide crowd (crotch rocket guys).

I think the real threat of our hobby being legislated out of existence is more related to the big automakers realizing that they're not making any money off of us & deciding to lobby our trusted elected officials to push legislation that would make ALL vehicles that are older than 10 or 15 yrs old (or whatever) for "limited use" only (parades and shows and such). I see a situation where the big 3 get & the green crowd get congress to believe that any car older than this is a "gross polluter" and is destroying the environment, and as such needs to be legislated out of regular use.

    It could happen.

  7. c'mon,
like none of us have ever done a big smokey burn out in the middle of the street?
the only difference between us and him is that he accidentally whacked something.
lets not make this guy a pariah due to a momentary lack of good judgement.

what was that thing about glass houses and stones?

So all you people calling this guy an idiot believe everything you read on the internet or see on tv? This guy may not make it, and it may not have been his fault. From what I read someone turned in front of him.

Hate to see someone local like that.

  10. One of my co-workers lost it in a car he was working on for a buddy (V8 240Z) due to a failed throttle linkage bracket a couple of weeks ago. The cheap chrome throttle bracket bent and pushed against the throttle arm on the carb, locking the throttle wide open. Totaled the Z, the late model truck in his driveway, took the corner off of his garage, went through the dining room wall and wedged, and shattered every window in his daily with landscaping gravel spit out from the back tires. He was just power-braking it at about 1/3 throttle trying to diagnose a hiccup under load. He's not an idiot. The owner of the car caused it all by being too cheap to buy the $10 throttle bracket instead of the $3 throttle bracket. The exact same thing could have happened here, compounded by the guy turning in front of him after the throttle stuck open.

As for the body coming off the frame, something is not right here. Judging from the minimal damage to the minivan, there is no way that body should have come loose. When a truck with a load gets T-boned at 80 MPH by another full sized truck, the bed tends to stay attached. 4-8 1/2" or 5/8" bolts through 18 gauge steel hold it together under some pretty extreme conditions. My first car (a '66 C10) had the bed held on by the original metal stripes that go between the wood (no original wood) under the 3/8" plywood floor (which was not even attached). I once was stopped from over 50 MPH by a sign post catching the rocker panel when the 4X4 in front of me rear-ended a car I couldn't see without ever hitting his brakes. I didn't hit anything but the sign post. I had easily over 1000 Lbs in the bed at the time. The bed stayed attached. For that matter, there are only 4 or 6 bolts holding the cab to the frame, and the cab floor looked like lace doilies (300k mile Kansas farm truck), and the cab stayed put.
If the body moved during acceleration or the swerve to miss the turning car, it could easily have pulled the throttle cable wide open and caused the accident (and the burnout). I say no way that body was properly attached to the frame, and the body moving around is as likely a cause as any for the loss of control. I'm not saying that's what happened, but there are many plausible explanations that don't even involve the driver intentionally driving like a nutbar, and we shouldn't pass judgment without all the facts.

  11. only way to really tell on the reason the body came loose would see the wrecked car in person. light car and possible poor judgement could result in this mishap. wonder if alcohol or drugs were involved? i really have to agree with the "fuck the reporter" attitude they can really print some really mis-leading stuff.

One thing I see, apart from the body coming free, is that the steering wheel/column are still in the body. All the T-Buckets I've seen, the column was PART of the steering box; can't see if the steering box also tore loose however.

In the original photo posted on the net when I found this, the steering wheel and column are still in the car. In all the T-Buckets I've seen, the steering column is PART of the steering box, but the box itself is'nt visable. I wonder if the box also tore loose from the frame along with the body. Also, I've seen nothing more in the paper about the driver and his condition.

If you look at the slide show on the previous post, you can see the frame broke at the rear kickup also. If the frame broke in half the body was probably fastened poorly also.

  16. Anybody notice the tiny, lowrider chain steering wheel? Doubt it was any help trying to avoid traffic...

This is the third T-bucket crash that I have heard of, that the body came off. If you didn't build it yourself, now might be a good time to give it a good looking at.

The car companies got the Govt. to destroy 2-3 million early cars during The Depression because of "unsafe mechanical brakes". Hemmings published a photo of a big pile of cars stacked up in the desert just before they were burned.

man this sucks! Prayers for the T-bucket driver and his family.
This could have very well been any of us. From what Ive noticed in my whole driving career, People in new cars could give a shit about you and your old car, or motorcycle for that matter.
They will cut you off just like any other car on the road, and not even think twice about how much time money and hard work we've put into our rides, or think about the fact that most still have mechanical brakes and it takes us a little longer to stop.
Maybe the person in the "soccer mom minivan" was distracted by kids screaming in the back seat or whatever...who knows. Lets withhold judgment until we know all the facts.
and what sucks worse is the other car took off!!! He swerved to avoid that car, and they took not even knowing if he was dead or alive!

Pretty scary how the body just came off like that. So is this a case for seatbelts or against? He was ejected and suffered head injuries, and the last T crash in sandiego one person was ejected and died later..
seems like it might have helped in this case, as long as they weren't mounted to the frame like was said earlier.

First off, I hope the Dude recovers.
Back in my younger, drinkin', tokin', droppin',long hair day, I had one
of these death traps. V8 4spd. flat windshld, "Flyin'" around on a piece of plywood. 1rst 2nd & 3rd gears were a waste. You could
start in 4th and do a burnout for 2 blocks. It's a miracle any of my croud survived. Lucky for me I got Hardup and had to sell the "T".
Just my 2 cents, I'm sure a lot of us have BTDT, some I knew are dead.

God, I hope if I ever make the news you guys don't dog pile me for what some reporter said. It might be true but I wouldn't trash talk one of our own just on the news report.

  24. All you assholes say good ridence when it turns out that someone took a left hand turn in front of him.
What a bunch of low lifes .
I dont care what he was doing, the guys face was smashed in and he was choking on his own blood.
I dont think anyone deserves this, even if he was having a little bit of fun!! If he even survives, his life will be very miserable.
This is what the Kiro news clip says."Police said they would like to talk to the driver of the car that made a left turn in front of the Model T."

  26. I didn't realize how debilitating a head injury was until I had a stroke a while back and temporarily lost the use of my right leg and arm for about 6 months. NO ONE deserves that kind of helplessness, pain and mental frustration even if they were in the wrong. I hope he recovers fully, realizes the error in his ways, and tries to make up for it some how through community service or what ever. Really don't car about the car, that can be replaced.
