I broke an exhaust bolt on my comet, last one of course. The engine is a 66 200. Do I need to pull the head to remove the broken bolt? There's not much room to work with and the exhaust ports are angled down.It seems like it would be hard to drill it straight. Anyone else dealt with this before?

I had this happen on my old ranchero and pulling the heads is the best bet the heads heavy as hell though about 78lbs or so . Make sure to replace the head gasket and torque the bolts in the right order and sequence if you need that info just ask me I got all that.

I figured it would be best to pull it,kinda ****s,but it's better than screwing it up worse.

You might check with a couple of the local car repair shops. Some of them have contacts with guys who are real good with this. They usually come to the dealerships to do it.If you want to pay some one to do it on the car.

Just as a word of advice - have the head surfaced.

Even if it is just a light cut, those long heads can warp ever so slightly, and be warped but not showing it as long as they are bolted down.

Another idea is that if the motor has many miles on it and isn't a fresh build, I'd go ahead and have a valve job done as well as a surfacing. After all, you've got it off anyway, why not do a bit of proactive maintenance?

Others may disagree, but I've seen headgaskets blow almost immediately after putting a head back on after just a simple R&R for something like this.

Tap it out with a 1/4" wide chisel.
Tap on it on one side like a clock hand clock-wise, in the direction the would tighten it just to break it loose.
Then switch to counter clock to tap it back out.
    This ALWAYS works for me.
