Hey all, I am going to pick up a 52 ford f-1. I know little about 50's rods, so I was in need of some knowledge. The truck is not coming with a motor and I have a 307 Chev just sitting, is that a good combo or should I look to a different motor? Would I have to get an adapter plate or would I need a different bellhousing (the ****** is a 4 speed manual)? Thanks in advance Here is a picture of the beauty
Since the 4 speed didn't come in it you need to find out what make trans it is...Otherwise there's not enough info here..
It's all personal preference ... hot rodding is really all about being imaginative and using what you have. Being that the truck will be running with a hood, I don't think it much matters what engine you've got, although the ******** rodder in the back of my head says find a vintage mill for that thing. I imagine you could find an adapter for your ****** or have one made, but you might skip that problem all together with a vintage mill. Depending on your uses for the truck, you might also consider finding a different rear end (Ford 9" comes to mind) for better highway speeds and gas mileage. That's a neat truck ... I'd lower it a few inches and call it good. Welcome to the HAMB. Use the search function and see what others have done, and don't be afraid to ask questions ... after you've tried the search function.
The 307 is a low performance, generic motor. I'd look for a Buick nailhead. That being said, whatever gets you running is aces. Go with what will bolt up to the 4 speed.
Would that 4 speed be the "truck" gearbox with the "hay hauling" lowest gear? I got this same thing with a '49 flathead engine - now going in our roadster project. Kinda wondered at the time if this old ****** could be made "user friendly" with different gears, full syncro, etc. People just laughed at this idea. Guess such an upgrade may not be workable - couldnt find the parts. So we went with the T5 ****** from a 80's S10. So far so good......... Maby this work for your set up? And, oh yes, thats a sweetheart of a truck ya got!!!!
Nice truck, the 4 speed is most likely the one with the "Granny Gear". It's great if you are trying to pull tree stumps but it sure does **** for the street. Nothing wrong with a 307. it will move that truck just fine. Go with a late model 4 or 5 speed transmission.
