i have a 49 pont and would like to know how i could get power steering with out putting sub in would i be able to put steering box from other car and pump whould that be enough
We put a GM 525 box in my 49 olds. A 605 power steering box mounts the same as the 525. 2 of the mounting holes were the same the third is off by about an inch. I would think the pontiac and the olds would be the same. the pitman arm on the olds bolted up to the 525 box with no modification. Check it out.
Those frames are similar up into the late 50s so I would think a p/s box from 56 to 58 olds, pontiac or buick woud bolt in. 56 was the first year for the rag joint on the p/s box and all the earlier had the long shaft sticking out of the box and I think the boxes were bulkier too. Jeff
49-57 use basically the same frame. The 605 box is a near bolt on - you need to drill two holes and run some tube through them and weld it up. Rodder's Digest did an article years ago on swapping the box into a '55. Once you have that, any column with a rag joint will work, or saw off your old one and put a U-joint or rag joint on the end of it. The 605 came in the 77-86 midsize GM cars - Monte Carlo, Malibu, Gran Prix, and so on. Pretty much any GM PS pump will work on it, but the easiest one to mount would be an early Chevy six where it's combined with the generator. Those aren't cheap to round up, though, so you may want to figure out how to make a bracket for a late model pump.
I have a copy of the Rodders Digest article rustynewyorker mentions. P.M your email and I'll scan it and send you a PDF file. I did the swap on my 55, its one of the best things I've done to the car next to the disc brakes.
