I've sold the Impala wheel from the '49 Chevy (too big) and I'm seriously thinking about a Moon silverflake wheel (slotted verion), but before I make a commitment lets hear some other options.

  2. Before I went with anything from Moon I'd cut down a stock wheel to 16 inches and shoot it in heavy silver flake.

I'm a firm believer in spending some bucks/time on the steering wheel. You see as much of it as anything on the car - if you're getting some good seat time.

Spend a day walking the scrapyards, that's where I find the best wheels. Then you can have one that you can't necessarily order from a catalog.

what do you need one for?steering wheels are over rated! I would get a wheel that would go better with the interior than silver! just my 2 cents.

Vise Grips work like a charm. [IMG]

Before putting a silver wheel on there, I would look for a red one, or a gloss black. Just my opinion. -Joe

keep yer eye on ebay for boat wheels......easily adapted and NOT a run of the mill everybody else has one moon wheel... or .why not use the stock one and paint it all pretty like ?.....just my .02

  12. Some of the 70's and 80's Chevy passenger cars had some nice wheels.
One of those done up in the paint scheme of your choice would look good.

They are smaller in diameter and I believe would be a bolt-on to your Chevy.
I stuck an about 71 or so mid-size Chevy (Chevelle?) wagon wheel on my 63 Chevy pickup.
It was a tad larger than the 14" wheels that are popular today, but not near as large as the old pickup wheel - if I had to guess I'd say it was 15" in diameter.

    Do have a question though.

How did you do the pic of Marilyn on the dash?

Nice touch on a nice dash.

Thanks, but it was already there when I got the car.

As far as a wheel goes, 15" would be fine. I'd like to find something cool from the '60s. Black would be perfect.

well of course the plymouth "aero" wheel from the late 50s early 60s (the squarish one) are way cool. as donnie said keep your eye out on the boat wheels i keep a check on 'em all the time. donnie got one that looks a bit like the plymouth wheels but cooler. i was gonna bid on it til i saw he was the bidder. actually alot of 60s plymouth wheels were cool. you can find those regularly on the bay fairly reasonable. the aero wheels won't be cheap and will still need redone most of the time. here's one from a i think '58 chrysler i think is pretty cool to...ken....

The biggest problem with most of the really cool wheels from the '50s is that they're too big. I'd like to find something that is about 15". Someone must have/ be using something they can suggest....other that some rope or visegrips!

If you insist on 'flake, red might go better with your dash. You might consider some 'flake accessories (shifter handle, knobs, etc.) to continue the theme.

FWIW, my '55 has a silver 'flake steering wheel and it seems to work because the interior is siver/gray/chrome and the whole car is late '60's-themed (torque thrusts, Moon gas pedal, etc...).

    Just some food for thought.

With flaked steering wheels, is there a chance that the flake could rub off? May not help you, but I'm just curious...

The problem with red is every red is different. Already the dash and the garnish moldings are slightly different and then there's the seats. Seems like a lot of red. I thought silver would be neutral enuff to go with the red and black. I could be wrong, I have been.....once.

  21. The first pix of my current wheel (not sure of exact size) and the second is the one that is going to replace it. If ya want, i'll send the old one to ya as soon as I get the new one. Was that understandable? [IMG]
