so today i decided to start a 66 cad i bought for parts and see if it would run so i can transplant the engine on to my 52 truck. got the balancer flat top bob sent me out last week and everything went fine. it sparked right up, ran it for a few minutes then gave it gas a few times it was beautiful. after i gave it gas one last time it just died. it has fuel, i changed the fuel filter the filter fills up, i changed the plugs, i poured gas down the carb, starting fluid, carb cleaner, changed the carb to another one i had laying around and nothing. wtf else can i do to it to spark it up? it was running less than an hour ago WTF?!?!?!?! any thoughts?
Doesn't sound like you looked at anything ignition related. Points/Condensor? Cap/rotor? Coil? Make sure that's all firing appropriately.
yea you're right, ignition stuff scares me cuz i have no idea whats cooking under there. after giving what i wrote some thought it might be ignition and its not sparking the gas hmmmmm imma have my useless tree hugger neighbor hold the plug wires see if there is fire in the hole thanks. back to the board
Finally someone has found a good use of otherwise useless tree hugger neighbors! I don't actually have any of those neighbors, but if I ever get any, now I know what to do with 'em.
well thats what it was, no neighbor available haha but i put a screw driver in the wire put it close to the shock mount tried to spark it and no go. great.
well, it was the distributor, now i cant see to find the right firing order for this **** and google isnt helping much. would anyone know the firing order on a 429 cad? also, when i try to spark it, it sort of back fires and a big puff of black smoke shoots out the exhaust, and when i change the wires to what i've found on google still no go and the carb shoots gas out the front half. i think i fubared it. >=(
this is here I go for my caddy help http://www.cadillacpower.com/forum/index.php have fun with that 429 I love mine.
Did you pull the dist. if so did you pull #1 to top dead center and point rotor ****on at it and drop the dist. back in place? If not try that then set your firing order on it.
Clockwise rotation, 1 8 7 2 6 5 4 3. Plug gap at .035 (with points), point gap at .018, 5*btdc. jerry
first off slow down dont be messing with plug wire order if it ran fine for a short time your plug wires were fine second does the thing have points just pull one plug wire put a fresh plug in it and put on the frame and have some one crank the car over if it has points they could be rusty or dirty also frankly if a set of points scare you putting this engine in a different vehicle is way over your heads sorry just my thoughts
