I am wondering if anyone has any ideas about how to put A/C on a vehicle without having a compressor running off the engine. What about an electric compressor? What about an electric motor running a compressor? What about mounting the compressor under the cab running off the driveshaft? Any ideas/ experience appreciated.

paint it black and mount it down low on the engine.
You could go electric if you used a small 110 home unit and a LARGE inverter. And batteries to run the inverter

The new GM hybrids use a non-belt driven electric compressor but I bet it would be pretty costly to attempt. Open the windows......drive 60 mph.

Running it off the driveshaft would not be a good idea in stop and go traffic.

I've been considering something similar, both electric driven and driven by a belt at one of the wheels. I thought a modern blower motor might handle it, but I decided running it off the wheels (or the driveshaft) would make it too inconsistent. I'm definately with you in wanting to keep the engine compartment clean.

I've wondered about this too, I had a weird idea once:
What if I ran a high output alt or gen. Mounted one of those RV a/c converters behind the seat and ran a small (very small) portable home air cond unit back there. They are so small, cheap and dont take to much amps, plus easy to remove or modify controlls too.

Then I realized I spend too much time reading MAKE magazine.
    And opened the cowl vent.

    But could it work?

  9. This has been hashed out before. Mark IV underdash units have been around since at least the early 60s, maybe the 50s; I plan to get a 50s or 60s A/C compressor to power mine, and let them sweat through their clothes while they make fun of me for having A/C.

It's not impossible, there are aircraft A/C units that are driven by electric or hydraulic motors...

Check out the electric car builders forums. They all use electric motors driving the compressors either by direct coupling or belt driven methods. I am considering it also just not that far along in the build. Good luck.

Some of the A/C compressors on Hybrids require 200V or more.

  16. No way a modern blower motor has the balls to turn an ac compressor.

What about running one off the flywheel or back of motor. Make a pulley to go on back of flywheel or a toothdrive clutch

  21. Yep, lots of airplanes do. I fly used to fly a King Air that did and the one I fly now has an aux unit in the back that is electric. Our Citation is electric too.

I am involved in a project at work to supply a major automotive component supplier with servo motors and drives to be integrated into A/C compressors. Very compact, neat package.

Automotive and other vehicle manufacturers are driving more and more ancillary equipment with electric motors.

So you probably could hide the compressor, but now your alternator will be need to be the size of a coffee can!
