Hi Folks I was curious if anyone here has ever chromes their hood hinges (or had personal knowledge of someone who had) I know mine had a couple rivets that are molded in that'll have to be drilled out to take them totally apart so they can be blasted, and then chromed. SO am I correct is ***uming you just have to drill those out,.. then you'll just have to replace them with some type of nut/bolt deal afterwards. Also.. anyone have any idea what it cost to get this done. I know on the cars I have saw,.. it sure sets them off.
how much different is the look from powder coating and chroming something... Also.. what is the process... I ***ume you didn't have to dis***emble yours??
If you Chrome them....DO NOT DRILL OUT THE RIVITS ! Just put the hinge in the open postion, as if it were while hood is up & chrome it like that. A good shop will do there best, But there will be fogging in areas but will be almost unnoticeable while hood is up. remove the rivits and your asking for a Nightmare .. flimsy Hinges that dont work well.
DeSoto is correct. I had plated the hinges on my 55 Chev. NO dis***embly, just buffed and plated in the Open position. Came out quite nice.
Thanks for the advice you too... had never considered that option... How does the look differ between chromed and powered coated.??
I'll have to get some pics. The "chome like" powercoat actually looks pretty good but looks more like aluminum than chrome. Kinda like the "chrome" spray paint color that you can get in a store but this is powdercoated on. I had to take the springs out of the hinges ( 57chevy) and sandblast everything prior to the powercoating. He guys used the chrome powercoat..then a clear powercoat on top...very nice job..charged me $50 for the job which was a good deal vs. the price of getting them chrome plated. There are some companies that sell the polished stainless ones..but for $350...no thanks.
SMS out of NY removes the factory rivit, welds up the hole, drills a new hole to factory specs to counter any worn holes, chrome plates the hingles sepraretly and then re***embles the hinges using the exact factory style rivit, press fit to what your car originaly came with ...and they work GREAT. and no chrome fogging or "this areas" You get what you pay for.
