I ordered a 54-.. y block dist. that i will put on my lincoln with a 53 lincoln y block , i heard the dist. will fit without a problem just the geardrive is diffrent , anyone of you guys know what i have to change ??
I've only built one lincoln y-block and no ford y-blocks, but when I built the 56 Lincoln I did a bit of research and I thought the distributors were interchangeable completely. What's supposed to be different about the gear, different material maybe?
A ford Y block drops in unaltered into a Lincoln Y block. I used a later 292 dizzy on my 56 Premiere a few years back.
I believe the Lincoln gear is a 15 tooth, and the ford a 14 tooth. Also there are 2 different types of oil pump drives, strait slot and hex. Good luck, Mike.
You are correct!!! I have a few of each here. Lincoln is 15 teeth Ford/Merc is 14. I beleive early 54 was a tang drive and after that was all hex drive. Matt
And on the 15-14 count...there is actual published American fiction hingeing on this! One of the "Gus Wilson" Model Garage stories involves stolen car parts and diagnosing a car crippled by this swap...this stupid detail has been stuck in my head since probably 1960!
hmmm...i've got that magneto that is supposedly NOS for a lincoln y-block. now i gotta go home and count the teeth. Of course, i got it from a guy in kentucky so it's probably got a few less teeth than it's supposed to anyway... just kidding kentucky guys. i'm from Indiana. you're all i've got.
I just checked my lincoln Vertex and it is a 15 tooth unit. So there is a difference. These guys know their stuff man.
Wow wait a sec, so even the later 368 has a difference? It dropped literally right in! It was a '57 292 distributor into a '56 Lincoln Premiere. Learn something new every day!
well my friends of course it dos not fit have now a hex drive dist with the wrong gears on it, the gears would be a small thing to swap ,can i solve the problem if i switch to a later (55) oil pump?
go to www.yblocksforever.com somebody there will know everything there is to know. Only thing is it may take a couple of days for somebody to respond. Not like here .. but are y block experts there ...
Learn about Lincoln distributor cogs right here, direct from America's Greatest Mechanic: http://www.gus-stories.org/october23.htm So...that's the story. It's been stuck in my head since I was 10, apparently, and there it is online now...Hope Gus has internet access wherever he is now.
PS--looks like a blank page as it opens; scroll down a tad. There are two online sites with big collections of Gus classics dating back into the twenties. All are educational, and there are even several involving early hot rodding and racing.
