ok, I got it ! what is it? 31 chevy?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by turboroadster, Jun 5, 2008.

  1. its supposed to be a 31 chevy, I've heard em called sedans, coach's, tudor? I am ignorant on these, but have always liked the body style.
I happen to have a tunnelrammed 440 that would look nifty in it, and it also came with a bunch of original body parts .
note my tow rig, whew! all the way through Houston in traffic at 45 mph, slow and careful.
I'd appreciate any info on this, all the wood interior is toast, no floor, body panels are nice but need to be put back together and squared and braced. Since I'm redoing the bracing, could I take the doors and swap the sides and re-install suicide style? they look like they would fit perfect and even have the body lines match front to back.

I would call this a two door sedan. Tudor was just Ford's creative way of abbreviating, the 4 door sedan was called "Fordor". Cute, huh?

I've heard Coach too, it was printed on a lot of ***les back in the day, but I don't think it's a relevant term anymore. Tell people you have a '31 Chevy Coach and they'll have no idea what you're talking about. Tell 'em you have a '31 Chevy 2 door sedan and they'll understand.

Looks like a good project, first order of business should be to take those seats out and burn them, then bury them upside down with a stake through them so they can never return.

Officially they were called a 1931 "coach", a sedan was a 4 door, according to the 1931 parts manual sitting in front of me.;) Looks good , keep us updated on the project,as it progresses.

There's someone in Rosenberg just outside of Houston with a 32 Chevy 5 Window coupe for sale. I saw the one you have advertised on Craigslist. Here's the one I've found, they want $3500 obo for it. I was going to get it but decided to wait until I can find a model A.

If anyone's interested PM me and I'll give you their email address.

  20. actually, at 45 mph all the way, it was no problem, and this is an 05 TJ it would haul that ***** 100 mph if ya wanted, stopping is a different story all together

  21. That's nice, Tim. I think flipping the doors is doable, and you surely have the talent. Are you planning to powder coat the whole thing when you are done?

  22. yes sir on the pc of the body and fenders.

One of the model designations I have seen on some of the Chevy Old Car sites for this body style is as follow: "Confederate" 2 door Coach.

Those seats are freakin' me out. The headrests look suspended in mid-air....like evil ghosts of the street rod era. The idea to burn and bury them is good...hahaha

PS: I don't know if flipping the doors is such a good idea, unless they are perfectly square. Also, I think the bodylines are further apart at the front of the door compared to the rear?

  27. w/ no measuring, they look like the same width body lines from front to back, and the doors look square as can be, I havent measured anything yet to see. I'll let ya know after saturday when I get time to play with it a bit. I could be totally off, but I guess we will see when I get to measuring and squaring things out.
I plan on pulling the body this weekend and starting on the interior bracing etc

Well, what I meant was that the body lines are just a little further apart from each other at the front of the door. The top one angles up ever so slightly to meet up with the top body line on the cowl that's coming down to the door. I blew up the pic and it looks like that's the case.

    Nice car though, great shape.

  29. I'd do the same with the 440 tunnel ram, or at least put it in a 70s-80s car or jetboat, where it would be bad***. But in a traditional hot rod? Just doesn't belong.

Oh, and definitely try to save the grille shell, so every yahoo doesn't say,"Nice Deuce!"

I'm woefully ignorant on early Chevies, Is the firewall recessed like that from the factory or was that a modification?
