Dang T-man. that's some good pricing! I think I should be pretty set with what the local guys have told me. Maybe if I get lucky I might get the 57 chebbie up to the HAMB Drags this year!
i second this, i've bout plenty of tires from the junk yard. look for ones that dont look so dry and old. also as said look for cracks and signs of where people might have hit curbs and ****. i usually pull them for $15 tire and wheel $20 if the wheels from the cars where steelies.
I almost never buy new tires. For most my cars and trucks i go to the junk yard , ive found them with the blue still on them off a smashed car , I due this with everything rotors ,brake pads theres always one with brand new stuff. My girl was telling me how she needed new tires on her honda and to take it to my freinds shop . I went to the junk yard and found 4 brand new ones on the rims and traded the yard four 20 dollers each rims and all. Then i gave her the 300 in change she said what a deal he gave me. lol
Around hear ,(Raleigh N.C.)people can get great used tires for around 100.00 per set and they are mtched set's...Installed.....I don't know about everybody else but sometimes us poor people have to do what we have to do. I'm not saying to go racing or break the speed bearer with them ,but even on the highway you can drive the speed limit.......Just check them over and make sure they don't have bubbles or knots on the side walls...Here they even return/replace them for three days for free if their's a defect.... I know it not for everyone , but not a bad service for some people on a budget!
New tires? Really? I can't even remember the last set of new tires that I bought. My daily driver has a full set of used tires on it now, bought them used in January, still running fine, no unusual wear.
About ten years ago i was running my shop fixing flats and selling used tires. We got our used tires for free from the tire dumpster behind the WalMart .If i found a set of four and one was bad usually the other three were good. I can usually tell which direction a tire was running by running my hand over it and feeling for the feather edge. I have had radials fail when towing cars behind the wrecker backwards with the rear of the car raised on more than one occasion. We reciently took a 64 ford pickup to little rock towing it backwards and both front radials blew out the first at 125 miles and the second at 145 miles. Maybe it is just my luck but i dont like to run any tires in the opposite direction if i can help it.OldWolf
I've been driving since '71 & in all those yrs I have bought new tires 6 times all but 2 sets went on the wifes cars. The rest were used, only got one bad pair & the tire store replaced those....joe
I'm the king of running used tires, I'm notorious for my cheapness when it comes to new rubber. If I could give any advice, it's that you don't need to worry about the tread depth much, you're not going to be driving on ice or in the rain anyway. Half tread is plenty. The most important things to look for are weather checking and evenness of the wear. If a car had poor alignment it will wear the tires out crooked and throw your alignment off. If they were worn evenly I'd say go for it.
Check your used tire purchased DOT then the numbers. They should not be over 5 years old. I totaled a beautiful 40 Ford tudor sedan because of old tires. They looked good no checking, plenty of tread. A blow out at highway speed is disastrous. This was a case of tire weathering from the inside, 14 years old. Discount tire will not touch a tire over 10 years old, they won't even fix a flat. A number after the DOT 5006 means the tire was mfg. the 50 week of 2006. First 2 numbers the week of mfg. the last 2 year of mfg. Hope this helps in tour tire selection.
