!976 Volare Premiere with 318 / air/ with a rather small looking dif (didn't get a chance to crawl under) what do you think it would most likely have???? Anyway to tell which Volare's/Aspen (if any) would have the 8 3/4" ?
8 3/4, Not likely....maybe an 8 1/4. 8 3/4's are completely smooth on the back side. 8 1/4's have a regular diff cover.
Aspen/Volares were never made with a 8 3/4. There will be an 7 1/4 or 8 1/4 rear under that car. http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/Mopar_Rear_Axle_Spotter's_Guide
You can use a B body 8 3/4 under an Aspen/Volare with no problems. The perches line right up. I'm pretty sure the pinion angle is where it needs to be as well. The Aspen I raced for years never gave me a problem.
I think they are pretty close. I didn't really measure since I was running a slick. The tires didn't protrude to much, but then again they were only 9" wide. NHRA never screwed with me about it, so it must have been ok.
Should be about 54 inches from plate to plate.. just like the 68-70 B body....The 8.75 was long gone when they made the F body cars...
Thanks for the replies. I've got 60 in" drum to drum & 46 1/2" between perch centers on the 38 Plymouth. I'll be running a mild 318 and the car will weigh about 3000 lbs at the most. Anybody know of a stock rear end type that will bolt in without shortening? The only thing I can find on the web that looks ok is the Volare/Aspen.
I had a 8 3/8 from a pre 91 Dodge Dakota in my 39 Plymouth (was in the car when I bought it). You will probably have to move the spring perches but the width is right and the pre 91 has the 5 bolt on 4 1/2" bolt pattern wheels like your 38 has. A 66-70 B body 8 3/4" will also be the same width. The 8 1/4 from a Volare will work too, but be sure its not a 7 1/4. they are pretty light duty behind a 318. An 8 1/4 will hold up as long as your not beating it hard with good traction. Gene
Someone had mentioned the Dakota to me a while back but I didn't realize some had 5x4.5 pattern. Thats real good to know, thanks. I know where there's a Ford 8" from a 72 Mustang that measures up at 61" but not crazy about 8"s. The Dakota may be easier to find because all of the pre-80's stuff is being crushed. It's hard to believe that in the last year just about everything has disappeared. The salvage yards don't have anything over 15 yrs old and there's nothing left in a back yard. People are being paid commission to "scout" area's for any rusty metal considered salvageable. I can't even find an old pop can to kick. The old $200 backyard finds are gone and you have to buy something still drivable for a $1000 just to get the parts. With all this happening & the price of gas coupled with what is happening to the North American auto industry we are surely seeing the end of an era. Hope it ends well, don't know if there's much we can do to stop it.........think it's called evolution...
a chart i checked on a mopar site i frequent lists 68-70 b-body 8 3/4 at 60 1/8" drum to drum. shouldnt be impossible to find one. there are others that are 61 and change which you could proabbly make work and might be easier to find. im putting an 8 3/4 in my es***.
Oh, sorry......Forgot the "R". I meant Revolution not Evolution , like in rear end going round and round.
