I'm a 35-year-old guy, but when I was about seven and my grandad died, I "discovered" my dad's old stuff when they cleaned out his parent's house. Lots of it went to the dump that day, but I saved a lot of it, including many models and my dad's entire collection of 50's/early 60's HOT ROD, Car Craft, Rod & Custom, etc. (all of which I think I've pretty much memorized to this point). As I got older, and I took a bigger interest, dad and I set out to fill in the holes in the promo model collection, which has grown in the thousands. But anyway, to make a long, boring story even longer, I thought someone here might like this '40 Ford model my dad built. It won a couple model contest trophies in 1961 for best model and best paint at some contest. It is a '60 Ford color, Edsel grill, frenched headlights and antenna, '60 Olds taillights turned sideways, and so on. No one I ever show it to ever understands it, but I figured someone might sort of get it here. It's actually one of my favorites. FWIW.
You need to hook up with the "Sunday Models" thread. Do A search. They will go nuts over that thing! How old was your dad in '61?
I dig it. Back when I was in Junior High School, a friend of mine gave me all of his dad's old models from the '60s. I have a lot of stuff that looks like your pic. He also gave me a bunch of little model magazines and a vintage skateboard from the same era. I still have all of it and have no plans to part with it. It's all in my room with the bound Hot Rod Magazine books (also from the '60s) that I talked my Junior High School librarian out of.
He was 17. Edit: Ah, now I see what you guys are talking about with the Sunday models thing--there's a new post each week.
I have about 5 models I built when I was 9,1968! But the one I want to build again is the Lil Coffin. It was the first model I ever built.
Here's a less impressive '58 Ford built off the annual kit dad built back about when it was new or a couple years old. It used to look better, but over the years the paint has finally given up on this one.
Man, that's some cool stuff. It's been a long time since i put a good model together. Maybe I'll look for a good one this weekend. Thanks for the pics.
That 40 Ford RULES! Love the chrome reverse wheels, looks like it has dump tubes behind the front wheels as well. That car would look kick *** in 1/1 scale Someone ought to build it for real. Thanks for sharing and keep em coming.....
I think that is something money couldnt buy..thats so cool. I have an old model stock car that my dad built when he was a kid. I like how he detailed it all out, makes me wish i would have took more time on mine when I was younger...Ill try to take a pic for you all !
That 40 Ford is very nice! I built models when I was young in the late 60's-70's. I now have a 9 yr old son and I am happy to say he love older cars. Together we have built a couple of models. We plan on doing more in the fall/winter when the weather gets lousy. It is a great hobby.
Haha, yep. It has dumps and Scavenger pipes that he flaired the ends out on the stove. Thanks, guys! I've got some other model stuff. Seems like you like 'em, so I'll try to come up with a few more things you might find interesting.
This is a resin '61 Corvette model I built to match my dad's real car for a Christmas present one year. I even made a box. This one was a HAMB in reverse. It's an old '58 Chevy annual kit I bought at a junk store, and it was built with all the fins and spotlights and louvers glued all over it from the original customizing kit. It was also painted black with a brush. I bought it for parts, but then I started fooling with it and sort of redid it back to stock.
I should get my dad's old models. They're in a couple boxes in his attic. I'm not sure what kind of condition they are in now.
That file cabinet? Clutter and junkola. Actually, those pics were taken a few years ago. That old cabinet isn't even there anymore. Most of those models have their original boxes. They're just being stored along with all the models that there wasn't room to put out. I really like them, and my dad and I have had a lot of fun building it up over the years.
